Steven

I am thinking of getting a larger monitor for my Macbook Pro and was thinking of getting either:

- Apple 27inch LED Cinema Display
- Dell Ultrasharp U2711
- Alienware OptXTM AW2310

I will be using the monitor to do Microsoft Office, play games, watch movies, use internet and some Photoshop + Web Design. Which monitor would be the best and why? Price-wise the Alienware is the best but it is also smaller but has 3D support. Also if you know any other good monitors I should consider, please include them as well. Thanks!

Answer
The Apple and the Dell are both IPS (In-Plane Switching) panels, which give better color reproduction and viewing angle. The Alienware is a TN (Twisted Nematic) panel, the standard type for all low-cost displays, which has generally poorer color reproduction but is in some cases more responsive.

The Apple is the only display that boasts LED backlight (greater contrast, lower power consumption); it is assumed that the other two use standard CCFL backlighting.

The Apple and the Dell have a native resolution of 2560x1440, whereas the Alienware has only FullHD (1920x1080). Pixel density is probably fairly comparable due to the size difference.

There is no ideal display for all uses. Graphic design has very different needs from gaming. Choose your most important use and choose a display based on that. For instance, if you were using it for professional graphic design, the Apple display seems like the best choice; for hardcore gaming, maybe the 3D is what's important to you so go with the Alienware. All three are likely to be very satisfying displays for general use.
