what do i need to run three monitors as one desktop?
Answer
The best way is with the new ATI Radeon HD5000-series of video cards that are equipped with DisplayPort.
The ATI HD5000s are the first consumer-grade GPUs to offer triple monitor support. ALL consumer-grade single-GPU cards before the HD5000s can only support two monitors max apiece.
All you need is an open PCIExpress 16x slot in your computer, an HD5000-series card like the HD5750 (currently the best-bang-for-the-buck 3-monitor card), and at least one monitor equipped with a DisplayPort jack (the other two can be DVI).
nVidia also came out with triple monitor cards a few weeks ago-- The GTX400-series. I like ATI's Eyefinity implementation better though, since there are games written to use Eyefinity to span the game screen over three monitors.
I wouldn't bother with two-video-card setups for triple monitors-- Why go to the expense of buying a Crossfire/SLI motherboard and two cards when just one $130 HD5750 will do for triple monitors? One card driving 3 monitors also works more seamlessly.
Hope this helps.

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT 1GB GDDR3
Answer
Nope. You can't span a game over three monitors using 9800GTs. nVidia simply has no provisions for that built into the 9800 GPU.
The games must be written to support spanning over three monitors, and right now the only way to do that is through ATI Eyefinity, so you must have an Eyefinity video card as well in order to do that. Oh, and the third monitor must be connected to the ATI Eyefinity video card's DisplayPort jack.

Your only option if you want to run Eyefinity-capable games that can span over three screens is to get an ATI Radeon HD5000-series card and a third monitor with DisplayPort.
Your 9800GT is nowhere near "top of the line." It's 3 years old, ancient by today's standards. Even the midrange $130 Eyefinity-capable Radeon HD5750 can beat the crap out of your 9800GT.
