What is a good empire building game?

I want a game for the computer with good graphics, the ability to fight in large battles and build empires which you then monitor. Im really looking for an immersive game with city building, population control, economy, etc.

Don't play Runescape it's kinda fun I used to be addicted but the Graphics suck
