Gaming Monitor Recommendations?

JamesisJex

I'm wanting to make a gaming rig I already got some educated advice for cards and a cpu but one thing I'm going to need its a top notch monitor. My price range 150-250$. I'd like to pay the least amount possible but i do need the quality so recommendations?
Note, I'm considering 3D but I think it's a gimmick so I don't want to pay extra for it, but it would be cool.

Answer
Im very happy with the Dell U2311H I just purchased. If you want a monitor for movies AND games you should look into 1080p monitors (unless the black borders don't bother you, then a 1900x1200 should be fine).

The dell U2311H is an 8-bit ips monitor. All TN panels are 6-bit, and use dithering to display the full 16.7 million colors that a 8-bit panel can produce without dithering.

IPS is notorious for having a better picture and color reproduction than TN panels. IPS is also notorious for being slower, but with this 8ms Dell model I don't notice much difference coming from a 5ms TN. I play FPS games too and its fine for me.

Google tftcentral for some good reviews, check out some of the new monitors. If you are going for a TN panel I recommend the Samsung PX2370 LED or the XL2370-1 LED. IPS picture is much prettier though not quite as fast.

The Dell U2711 is a really good monitor as well that I may of considered if I wanted to spend three times the price.

I am convinced that the Dell U2311 (23inch) is the best monitor money can buy for around $250 US if you buy it with a sale and/or coupon. The 24 inch U2411 is $500 and is wide gamut - which is a whole different topic

Help With A Dell Monitor. [U2312HM]?

Jacob

Does anyone own the dell U2312HM monitor, and use it for gaming? If so, do you notice any major ghosting? If not, is a 8ms [grey to grey] response time good for gaming?

Answer
Hi Jacob,

Ghosting during gaming could be caused due to the monitor or the video card. To check the exact cause, you may try using a different monitor.

You may also try restoring the monitor to factory defaults. You may check the User's Manual on the following link for steps:

ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics/esuprt_Display/dell-u2312h_User's%20Guide_en-us.pdf

Also make sure that the video cable connections are firm. Updating the video drivers on the system may also help. A gray to gray response time of 8 ms is pretty good.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
GauravS

Kyle

I want to get a top of the line gaming monitor that is >$250 . I'm looking for one with a fast response time and colors that will make an enemy pop in an FPS. Any suggestions?

Answer
well for under 250 you wont be getting a 120hz monitor. So basically any monitor with a good response time 8ms or under and 1920x1080 resolution.

How much should it cost to build a basic computer?

Now I don't do any gaming, video editing, or anything that would require a lot of power. Mainly I would be just converting video files to DVD and burning them, surfing the web, and downloading music. Of course I can just buy a pre-built computer that can do all of this without a problem, but I want to have some kind of computer building experience just for fun. How much do you think I should spend on building a simple rig?

Answer
I chose some good PC Hardware from Newegg.com for you

ASUS M2N68-AM AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 7050PV Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
$55.99

Hanns·G HB-175APB Black 17" 8ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
$129.99 -$40.00 Instant save = $89.99

XION II XON-103 Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply
$69.99

ASUS (Dual Panels) IDE DVD-ROM Drive Model DVD-E818A3 - $19.99

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor
$35.99

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop
$34.99
-----------------------------------------
Total = $306.94 w. flatscreen

Total = $216.95 w/o flatscreen

These are much better quality hardwares than you can get from any low price prebuilt system like Emachines and whatnot.

You can basically just upgrade the processor to something more powerful should your needs grow. Anything else is solid
