Computer Gaming: Alienware or MacbookPro?

Haru (Of T

I need a new laptop soon, but I'm not sure which is the better deal for what I want; I'm going to need it for school, but I also want it to be great for online gaming. The cheapest Alienware laptop is ~$1000, and the cheapest MacbkPro is ~$1200. I don't know a lot about computer parts, so what parts should I invest more $ in? Help me out please computer guys!

Answer
Well If I was you grandad I would advise you to never buy a Mac computer and I would advise you to never buy windows 8, period What I am going to do is open your eyes and hope you take this advice,

Windows and mac operating systems are NOT the only computer operating systems in the world, There are others that are up to date, they are faster far more superior, most of all they are Free and you can test them out on your old computer,

This first one will give you all the education software that will take you through high school, collage and university on every subject
Uber Student and Edubuntu will give you everything you need for education
http://uberstudent.org.
http://edubuntu.org
other free operating systems that are up to date April 2013
http://zorin-os.com
Sparky Linux Game Over has over 3 gig a bytes of games, scroll to the bottom of the web page for it
http://sparkylinux.org/download
Here you will find over 40.600 free professional application software packages and over 1,100 games
http://sourceforge.net

If you do your research as you should do you will find that very few companies use Mac computers you will also find the enterprise companies are dumping windows and moving to Free open source software and operating system

If you decide that your going to get a Dell Alienware then make sure that you have Linux installed on it. and NOT windows 8. now you know the rest is up to you!

What is the best computer company in 2013? DON'T SHIT WITH YOUR STUOID APPLE?

Best computer for gaming?

bravo

Hi everyone i have core 2 due cpu with 1 gb 3d card and 2gb ram but i can't play tomb raider 2013 probably and know i thinking about upgrading my cpu so i need advise from u guys that quad core prossesor is good enough for gaming ? If yes then which model is best and also tell me about 3d card that which one is suitable with quad core prossesor and how much ram do i use? Am really looking forward to watch dog's and lot a high games r coming in 2014 can any one help with upgrading my cpu? Any one?

Answer
The CPU isn't really what you need to upgrade for gaming. Many people think it's neccecary however it's a common PC gamers mistake. What you need to be spending more of your money and upgrades on are Graphics cards as these are what gets you your gaming performance.
Your graphics card is probably a low end graphics card and is outdated so I would recommend a better graphics card like the AMD radeon HD7770:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-FX-777A-ZNF4-Graphics-Mini-DisplayPort-Dual-Link/dp/B007A44T42/ref=sr_1_5?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1375646797&sr=1-5&keywords=AMD+RADEON+HD7770

However your CPU itself is very old and so is your RAM. Looking at your entire computer the whole thing needs an upgrade. You will have to keep replacing all the parts to get a decent gaming PC.
Most of the newer CPU's have more recent sockets so your motherboard won't be compatiable with them either. Plus your motherboard with an older socket and a generally older motherboard overall may not support as much ram. And for gaming I would say 4-8gb is the sweet spot.

So overall I would recommend buying a new PC. I recommend this if you're thinking about it as it's a great PC which will get you great performance on tons of games and applications. It's really cheap and reliable and from a trusted UK company that has free shipping:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vibox-Dynamo-AMD-Quad-Core-HD7750-Top-Gaming-PC-8GB-1TB-Super-Fast-Computer-/190829864226?pt=UK_Computing_DesktopPCs&hash=item2c6e58a522

Hope this helped.

Decent Computer Video Card For Gaming?

William

I need advice. I need a decent video card for my computer, with dedicated video ram of at least 512 MB, or preferably higher. I need a card that's decent, and that's cheap, something that's good for video games in 2013.

Please take the video card into consideration with my Computer. Will it be able to work?

Here are my computer specs, or at least i think they are

Manufacturer: Hewlett- Packard Company
Model: s5-1204
Processor: Intel(r) Pentium(r) CPU G630 @ 2.70GHz 2.70 GHz
Installed memory (RAM) 4.00Gb
System type: 64 bit operating system.

Thank you for reading and for you suggestions, I appreciate it.

Answer
Hi William,

Your CPU isn't fast, but that is okay as it still can run games like Skyrim and Battlefield 3 but that really depends on what graphics card you choose.

I've listed the cards on NewEgg below, I hope this helps.

-EDIT-

Sorry I missed the HP model details, you can only use a slimline/low profile graphics card.

The HD 5450 I've listed below is $33 on NewEgg.com, also the 220W is just enough for the graphics card to run.

There are faster low profile graphics cards, but your power supply really limits you.

I have some old IDE hard-drives and none of the new computers have IDE connectors? What should I do? Try to find a old computer?

None of the new computers have IDE connectors?

Also why is is some power supply for the computer are 20 watts and some 500 watts? Also why is it some power supply for the computer and computer fans less 2 or 3 years and some 9 years or more?

Why is the stors killing backwards hardware support now was not like that 2 or 3 years ago?

Answer
Ummm where do I start. Ok here goes.

IDE is made obsolete by SATA, but you can still find new motherboards with new sockets that have them, they're also called PATA. Think of it like buying cassette tapes. Most stores don't even sell them anymore, but some still do, and most new stereo systems don't have cassette players, but a few still do. You just have to look around a little more to find them.

there are no 20W power supplies, but some are 300W and some are 1200W because not all computers need a lot of power, but some do. I have 2 desktops, my workstation/gaming rig and my backup for when the workstation is rendering for long periods of time. The workstation uses 1000W of power and my backup uses 400W, mostly because of the graphics cards.

Some parts are built better and last longer, and usually cost more.

It seems to go in spurts. Technology will make a new breakthrough and every company will race and compete to be on top, then it will calm down and level out for a few years, then a new breakthrough will get everyone scrambling to get ahead again. It's just how it is. Right now, processor and GPU manufacturers are at war again and they're all rushing to make things better and faster, and game makers are using the new advances to pump more and more detail into their games because they can. Don't worry, this too shall pass and things will be calm again, probably in 2012 or 2013. AMD is releasing a new line of highly anticipated processors, supposedly this summer, and Intel just released their highly anticipated processors earlier this year (Sandy Bridge) and I think that's it for a few years (probably improved versions of those processors, slightly faster, but not revolutionary, will come out in 2013 and 2014).

It's frustrating, I know. I've been there. I built my workstation 6 months ago and the RAM is half as expensive now, the Sandy Bridge came out for the same price as the processor I bought and it's faster and better, and the 550ti GPU is out at the same price I paid for my 460s.

Are computer cameras in our TV sets and Computers spying on us?

patricia

The cable connects the TV and Computer and most new ones have little cameras in them so do not you think a hacker(s) could be watching you?
OK -What to do about the camera in the TV?

Answer
The answer, according to research, not so comforting. Devices that can spy, eye opening.
http://rt.com/usa/smart-tv-security-access-092/ ''Viewers, beware: while youâre watching TV, your TV might be watching you back.A security firm discovered that Samsungâs Smart TV can give hackers access to the deviceâs built-in camera and microphones, allowing them to watch everything you do.The Malta-based firm ReVuln posted a video showing its team of researchers hacking into one of the Samsung TVs and accessing its settings, channel lists, widgets, USB drives, and remote control configurations. The security flaw allows hackers to access any and all personal data stored on the TV. âWe can install malicious software to gain complete root access to the TV,â the video writes. With this access, hackers can use the Smart TVs built-in camera and microphones to see and hear everything in front of it. Instead of just watching TV, viewers could themselves be watched without knowing it. But this flaw isnât present in just one specific model. The vulnerability affects all 11 Samsung televisions of the latest generation. The Smart TVs have many of the same features as a computer, but lack the same kind of protection. The devices do not have security features such as firewalls and antivirus software. Fortunately for concerned viewers, the problem has a silver lining: hackers must first breach the network that the television is connected to, as well as know the IP address of the device. As a result, security breaches would likely only occur as a targeted attack against an individual, rather than randomly. Unlike an Internet virus, a hacker would have to exploit the network manually.''

Are there any good games that I can play?

My chipset is called: Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family. I have been trying to play MMO's but nothing I have tried works with this. Are there any games that will work, maybe an online game with no downloading involved? I am not completely opposed to downloading something, it's just nothing I have downloaded works. Even a single player game would be okay.

Here is a link to an image of my system details: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JViAvdmu9J0/UaRBN6LQIdI/AAAAAAAAAAY/mP9_wYb4OtI/w571-h186-no/2013-05-27

Please don't say flash games unless you know one that is exceptionally good.

I don't really have the money to buy anything.

Thank you for your answers.

Answer
I really have a lot of fun playing eRepublik! Maybe you like it too!

It's a free game that simulates a life full of social interactions, where you fight, you have companies, you are part of groups. Millions of people all around the world are playing simultaneously.

You also meet many interesting friends! Try it!

I'm a high schooler and I don't know if I want to get a laptop or computer...?

Esther L

I already know that laptops are used if you're more mobile but can some one tell me which is best for me? I occasionally go on vacations with my family around 3-4 times a year for about two-three days each trip, so I don't think I would need to bring a laptop with me but I don't know if I should use a computer or a laptop for doing school work and gaming because both are okay with me and I just don't know what to pick. And what are the best brands/certain types of laptops and computers in 2013? If you can, please mention a certain type of product(s). Thank you very much!

Answer
Desktop are better for gaming and will last longer then any laptop out there. Laptops are portable and will last 3 to 5 years depending on how you treat it. Any puter you buy will begin to age out after 3 years because of the march of technology. I know a lot of people who buy new every three years just to stay up with the new advances in CPU and GPU.

I prefer ASUS and HP. ASUS has the best warranty of the market on most of their products. Most of their laptops come with a accidental drop warranty.

If you want ask another question and all of use can provide links to our favorites system to recommend.

Brand buying advise.

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.
