Good Gaming Computer?

Maggie Dar

I have been using a cheap laptop for gaming for the past couple years (which was sh*tty as is), then it decides to break down. I had to have it formatted, and now has to have Linux on it, which is now 1000000x more sh*tty for gaming, and everything else for that matter. I decided not to bother with that laptop anymore, it's outdated and an utter piece of crap. Now, I don't know much about computers, but I plan on getting a computer good for gaming, so I need help! Perhaps a list of good brands/things to look for etc. Any information is good. Thank you!

Answer
The best you can do is build your own.
Three parts tell you how to do it:
http://www.newegg.com/Store/Computer.aspx?name=Computer-Hardware
PC parts:
Case, system fans, motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler/paste+heatsink, DRAM, Graphics, power supply, Optical drive, hard disk drive, keyboard, mouse, display, speakers/headset, operating system

Many CPUs have integrated graphics, but are the lower end. It is all about how much you want to spend. You can go with a laptop, but the gaming performance is lower for the price paid.
The kits often do not include Windows 7, which is another $100

Gaming mostly depends on the graphics.
This slow load site of mostly laptop but some desktop by checking on the left and hitting restrict, shows gaming capability in summary:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
This site lists CPUs and graphics on a 2nd tab
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
You can estimate from one into the other
Case - cooling fans, space inside, cool looks like led's, sturdiness, external ports
motherboard - to match to CPU, different features like overclocking to make CPUs run faster, ethernet speed, audio quality, power handling, reliability of capacitors, number of slots for graphics and memory
CPU - main processor
DRAM- running multiple applications and processes at once and a holding bin for data to CPU and GPU
Graphics - gaming processor
power supply - power to run everything, efficiency is a factor, wattage, and whether cables are attached or modular
Optical drive - DVD or Bluray
hard disk drive - storage bucket
If talking a laptop, it is looking up the features in the above linked tables.
By brand:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
Mac's (Apple) are very expensive. Average in the table is alphabetical.

Stores: Newegg.com, Tigerdirect.com, Amazon.com are leaders for the parts and some full systems.
Can also look for laptops at Lenovo.com and HP.com

If under about $600, I suggest used gaming desktop systems on Craigslist
Lenovo.com has Y570 ideapad as a decent gaming laptop at about $700
HP has some competing now
Lower priced all built up gaming systems:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227408
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227383
Find similar at other stores.

First decide desktop vs laptop
then decide your price point
then decide if desktop about build-your-own or buy complete
then consider your sources
then determine best features for the price and weigh in brand
Then you can show a few options here asking more specifics.
Adding: Don't rely on what someone says is a good brand since they usually have little experience or consider old data. Surveys now say HP+Dell are low rated.

Fun sleepover games???? HELP!!!?

Makayla

My friend and I are having a sleepover tonight. What are some games we can play?

Answer
Stuck in the mud, hide and seek, computer games, ball games, treasure hunt.......
Here are some I got of the internet>>>
Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board

Ingredients

Just Add Guests!

To Play

The basic premise of this game is to have one person lie on the floor while everyone else sits on his or her knees around her with both hands slightly under her.

There is one "Storyteller" who sits by the head and tells a made up story about the person on the floor's life and her "untimely demise."

At the end of the story, everyone chants "Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board" repeatedly as they lift her off of the ground.

The idea is to have everyone believing that "spirits" are helping to lift her off the ground (in reality, she is probably being lifted because of all the people helping to lift her). Take turns, and tell a story about everyone!

Junk Food Frenzy
This is a great game that will keep your tummy full and keep you laughing.

Ingredients

Index Cards

Dessert Recipes

Ingredients to Make the Desserts

Measuring Cups & Spoons

Baking Dishes

Bowls

To Play

Dig out some of your favorite dessert recipes and copy the instructions on index cards.

Buy ingredients for all the desserts and place them on the kitchen counter.

Shuffle the cards and divide the guests into two teams.

Have players take turns drawing cards.

Each player reads the card and takes the listed ingredient.

When all the ingredients have been distributed, give the teams thirty minutes to prepare a dish using the ingredients accumulated by the individual players.

When the dishes are complete, have each player taste and eat the results, then vote on the best tasting dessert! For a fun variation, give both teams the same ingredients and see what different desserts they come up with (without using recipes).

Do-It! Dice

Ingredients

2 Square Cardboard Boxes

White Paint

Markers

Dice

To Play

Buy or find two square cardboard boxes and paint them both white. On each side of the square, write a command or a stunt, such as "Sing our National Anthem," "Hop up and down," "Spin around in circles," and so on.

Have the kids gather in a circle with the "Do-It! Dice" in the middle.

Have one player roll BOTH dice to determine his/her stunts, then have the player perform both stunts AT THE SAME TIME. This should provide lots of laughs.

Grabbit

Ingredients

Bag of Candy

Book

CD

Stuffed Animal

Nail Polish

Other Small Gifts

To Play

Place the objects above on a table, enough for each player.

Let each player name a favorite card game, such as fish, rummy, spoons, hearts, war, etc.

Gather the players around the table and remove all but one prize, setting the others aside.

Play one of the card games; the winner gets the prize.

Replace the prize, and start a new game.

Panic Word

Ingredients

Index Cards

To Play

Write down 100 words on index cards (one word per index card), such as blink, stare, lint, thread, plate, bra, and shoelace -- any words you like.

Stack the cards and put them in the center of the room.

Divide the players into 2 teams and seat them opposite each other.

Set the timer or stopwatch for one minute.

Have the first player from Team One draw a card from the pile and give clues to the word to his or her teammates before the timer ends the play.

If the word is "blink", the team member might say, "What you do if dust gets in your eyes?" Players from Team One try to guess the word; if they are successful before the time is up, they get a point.

If the timer runs out and the word is not guessed, the other team gets a point. Take turns until all the cards are gone. Then add up points to see who wins.

Who Am I?

Ingredients

Index Cards

Double Sided Tape

To Play

Write the names of famous people on index cards and tape one card to the back of each guest.

Have everyone walk around in the same room, and instruct them not to mention the name on each person's back, but to talk to everyone as if they are the person on their card.

As people begin to correctly guess their identity, they have to continue to treat the people who still don't know their identity like the people whose name is taped to their back. When everyone guesses his or her "true identity" then the game is over.

No-Mirror Make-Over
One of the best themes for a sleepover party for teenage girls is a Makeover theme. Host a beauty contest in which the contestants have to apply all of their make-up without a mirror. This is a game in which the most hideous contestant wins the prize. Make sure to take some nice blackmail photos of all the contestants!

Ingredients

Makeup

To Play

On the invitation tell the girls to bring their makeup...all of it!

Have everyone set it out.

Then, set a five-minute timer. Everyone has five minu

computers and graphic cards?

Ikaede

so i don't really know much about computers. but ofcourse i know that you need a good pc to play games with high graphics and stuff like that. i want to download crysis 2 and i know that it takes quite a bit after what i heard. when ppl start talking about stuff like requirments for playing a game like that i don't understand anything. they'll be like: Would Crysis 2 run on Max settings with these specs?
Intel core i7-960 (8M L2 Cache, 3.20 GHtz)
8GB Dual channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333 MHz - 4 DIMMs-memory
1.5 TB -SATA-II, 3GB/s, 7200 RPM, 32MB Cache HDD-hard drive
Single 1GB GDDR5 NVidia GeForce GTS 450 graphics card
with a THX Tru Studio PC sound card.

that was something i copyed from a site didn't write anything myself. so what does all of this mean? all i know is that i have something like intel inside CORE i7 lol. that stands on a sticker on my pc. i can run gw2 on pretty much the higest graphics. but if i put it all up it begins to lag a little bit, dunno if this will help but. and can u tell me what a graphic card is? thanks for your help lol and i dunno anything about computers. no one has never told me anything about them and i haven't come across a place to learn about it either so don't blame me for not knowing anything.

Answer
Computers can do things like gaming, and let you edit videos, and upload and download from the internet, and many other functions. Each function has certain system needs.
This site shows the parts of a computer whether you buy one or build one:
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/
This site scores graphics by G3D test score:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php
And, by knowing how strong the graphics is, if not held back by a weak CPU or lack of ram or other slowing factors in a PC, you can try to place it on a gaming report table:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
Desktop+laptop at top left, and selecting games, and RESTRICT and find the most similar to a graphics card of interest.
And, Desktop/tower CPU for gaming can be looked up here to see how good a CPU is at gaming:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html
You think of a graphics card as making and processing images and the CPU as flipping the pages. Motion is a set of images changes. Now, although there are other factors and can write books about PCs, these things are enough to evaluate. You need more information to upgrade about cases, motherboards, power supplies so if that comes up, you will need to ask for more specifics.
If you have:
Intel core i7-960 > Tier 2 by toms hardware for gaming. It is a nice CPU typically good enough. We can assume it will handle all but the highest levels of graphics cards. No CPU issue.

8GB Dual channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333 MHz - 4 DIMMs-memory > This says as Windows can use about 4GB and you have 4 more, your graphics will use what it can use also. The speed is a current one (1333). You have no RAM issue for gaming.

1.5 TB -SATA-II, 3GB/s, 7200 RPM, 32MB Cache HDD-hard drive > Although SATA III is faster movement of data at 6Gb/s, this is a big hard drive in storage size, still recent, OK speed at 7200 revolutions per minute, so would only be an issue in the highest of graphics cards. No HDD issue.

Single 1GB GDDR5 NVidia GeForce GTS 450 graphics card > Here is the gaming key. At the benchmark site GTS 450 shows 1504. I will add another site that has information about games, graphics, and other things:
http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=423&graphics=GeForce%20GTS%20450
GTS 450 is a level 6 (of 10), supports DirectX 11, Shader 5.0 Open GL 4.1 screens up to 2560x1600 and is 106 Watts. This is software and power information
GTS 450 is listed at Notebookcheck after adding desktop graphics cards, and, Crysis 2 is listed.
59 frames per second at high settings on a 720p screen and 22 frames per second on ultra settings on 1080p. So we can say if you have a 1080p display, you get less than maximum because about 30 frames per second is fluent without lag, but are strong enough for high settings. Battlefield 3 and Skyrim are playable on high settings.

Now, if you want to play at even higher settings, you need a better graphics card. You need to describe your power supply in some way since the 12V power from it powers the CPU+graphics+disk drives+fans of your system. Knowing you can run 104 watts, if you have a PC case of about 7 inches or more wide instead of 4 or 5, you can get a standard graphics card. Crysis-2 on ultra needs better than HD 7770. And to not worry about the power supply, need a power efficient card. Maybe a GTX 650. Available for a little over US$100, it is only 64 watts or so. You can buy a GTX 650 card using PCPARTPICKER and replace the GTS 450 with it.

That is a short course in gaming vs computer specifications and shows where you are at. I can be emailed, or ask another question.

What games can I run on my computer?

Qulk43

I have an Acer Aspire V5-571. My processor is an Intel Core i3-2367M and 1.40GHz. And I have 4 GB ram and a 500 GB hard drive.

Answer
Mostly older games and a few newer ones on low settings
You have Intel HD 3000 at #287 in this gaming table:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
Loads slow.
You can check a game at this site also:
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=625&game=The%20Elder%20Scrolls%20V
Skyrim at low to medium settings (closer to low than medium)

What does it take to get work composing music for video games/indie films?

Michael Sc

I'm not looking to become famous, (that would be nice though) just put food on the table by doing what I most love. I will probably supplement my composing with teaching.

I am planning to get a masters in composition, and possibly a minor dealing with jazz. (maybe a major, who knows)

Networking, Networking, Networking !!!!

Having a great portfolio is probably the best first step you can take, Getting some experience with free, student, or low budget games is the best idea. You shouldn't turn anything down for the next years to come.

If you are in school, go take a film class or a multimedia class(if they are offered) try to meet the people who are making films and get some experience.

If you don't live in a big city the you should maybe think about moving to a bugger city. Learn about all the video game companies around( don't just look at the big one) you might start off a get experience for a little company.

If you want a full time job, Word on sound design, companies usually tend to hire sound designer but most composers a freelancers.

The Degree won't do much, your portfolio is way more important. Learn to be really good and really fast with computers and computers software.
