Monitors refresh rate vs. game refresh rate?

Gallstaff

My 32" LCD television has a recommended 1360 x 768 resolution and a max refresh rate of 70hz (or at least thats what it lets me go to before the monitor gets no signal in the catalyst control center) and World of Warcraft has a max of 85hz in my settings... should i have it at 70 or 85? or will setting it at 85 mess up the fps if the monitor itself doesnt even go that fast?

Answer
The refresh rate is how many times per second the monitor will draw the image. Really to not get the wrong idea from joe's statement, it really doesnt affect your fps. Having too little of a refresh rate will cause flicker which can cause eye strain. Really if you have 60hz or above it is good. If i were to get new one though i would say get a 120hz monitor would probably be optimal.

But as to the question, no i would not recommend trying to force the refresh rate to go higher then what the monitor is set to be able to handle. Same goes for trying to force higher resolutions. They will only have negative effects.

Which Monitor should i get?

Should i get a 120 Hz Monitor or a 60 Hz Monitor will i see any difference while playing games like Battlefield 3? a 120 Hz Monitor would cost me about 100 $ More...

Answer
Most people will not notice the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz right away.

What are they ?Which one is more important for a gaming monitor , 120 hz and 5 ms or 60hz and 2 ms .

Answer
Refresh rate is how often the monitor refreshes its picture. response time is how long it takes to go from one picture to another, usually grey to grey. The best for gaming the 120hz with 5ms response time

120hz vs 60 hz monitor?

is there really that much difference? Primary use would be gaming and I have 2 60hz monitors already that I never noticed when movie watching or playing any games any screen lagging or errors. So I was wondering if dishing out another couple hundred dollars or so would even be worth it for twice the hz

Answer
It depends on the game and the individual watching it. You can put together a demonstration that will highlight the difference, but it won't be apparent for most games or players.

I'd spend the extra money on a better video card. That almost always does make a significant difference on the high end games.
