Gunnar gaming glasses?

BenQ gg

Is it really that effective?
Yesterday I played for about 8hr took a break of 30 mins. When I woke up this morning (I woke up at 5 am)
To revise I saw tears coming out of my eyes.
Would I become blind?
Is the gunnar effective?
How does it work?

Answer
First up, you won't go blind... your eyesight might suffer a bit (where you might need glasses or contacts), but unless you're placing a bright source of light directly on your eye (or a heavy amount of UV radiation)... you're OK.

Gunnar Optiks glasses aren't for everybody, but if you're planning looking at a screen for prolonged periods of time (say for work or something)... then it might not hurt.

HOWEVER, there are other ways you can help reduce eye strain...

1) Lower the color temp of the screen during nighttime hours... while it'll make things a look "warm" or "yellowish", a lower color temp (~3400 K) is a lot easier on the eyes than a higher color temp (~6500 K).... & your eyes will actually adjust to the lower color temperature, so it won't appear to look any different.

If you're playing on a computer, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND installing f.lux ( http://www.justgetflux.com ) as it'll automatically adjust the color temp of your monitor based on the time of day for your location (6500 K during the day, 3400 K during the night).

2) Take more frequent breaks -- taking a short break every 2 hours or so for a few minutes (go to the bathroom, get a drink / snack, ect.) so you have some off-screen time.

If you do these 2 things, you can get by without buying any Gunnar Optiks glasses as you're doing stuff that those glasses would be doing in the first place. I've note installing f.lux on my computer was one of the best decisions of my life I can utilize my computer at night without straining my eyes or the blinding harshness of the light from the screen.

If you're still insisting on Gunnar Optiks, just be prepared to spend $100 or more on a pair... even more if you need a prescription.

video gaming glasses?

John

Are there gaming goggles (at a reasonable price) that make it so the t.v. is basically in front of my eyes? for deeper explanation, say im playing CoD mw2. I was wondering if there is any way i can make it feel like a real first person perspective. Please leave link and possibly price. Thank for future answers.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/28/22moo-intros-11-new-video-eyewear-products/
this is the sort of thing im looking for, but cheaper.

Answer
You have to use a 120hz monitor in 3D mode for the glasses to work. They won't work on a standard monitor.

I would read into 3D monitors.

Does anyone know of a good monitor for gaming with the following specs? LED backlight, 1080p, 120hz, 23-24 inches.

It seems so hard to find one with all of these, anyone know of one?

Answer
I found the COBY LED3DTV2486 1080P 120 Hz LED 3DTV With 2 Pairs Of Glasses (24") at:

Help with selecting a gaming monitor please?

Jared Frie

I want to get an LCD monitor that's a little bigger than my 19" one and I don't have hundreds to spend on it, so if necessary I'll find a refurbished or used one. I'd like the resolution to be good and also be able to display text without it getting fuzzy because I do a lot of spreadsheet work too. What things do I need to look at besides resolution? Refresh rates? Aspect ratio? And what is a good aspect ratio? One time I tried a 16:9 screen and it distorted all my pictures. I work with family picture albums and those widescreen monitors look like they stretch the pictures and make them ugly. So if anyone could suggest a good monitor that works well for games, text, and pictures, that would be great. :)

Answer
It is known that 15360 X 8640 ( 8640p ) ( 16:9 ratio ) @ 300 pixels per inch is the most the eye can see. Most people can't tell the difference between 1920 X 1080p ( 1080p ) ( 16:9 ratio ) and 15360 X 8640 ( 8640p ) ( 16:9 ) ; therefore a fixed raster or also called native resolution that is the best would be 1920 X 1080. Older CRT monitors were best for gaming 0 ms response time, and each resolution it can display is a native resolution. LCD gaming monitors are cheaper TN panel types, so your response time is around or lower than 2 ms. Also 3D monitors ( with 3D glasses ) with true 120 Hz refresh rate are the ones to use, not for 3D glasses but normal 3D gaming. Some 120 Hz monitors use interpolation which is not a true 120 Hz refresh rate. Benq makes true 120 hz monitors my older two BenQ XL2410T monitors can only display 1920 X 1080 @ True 120 Hz with DVI-D-DL connection. Benq makes newer 120 Hz gaming monitors ; XL2420T and XL2420TX with 3D glasses, ( these Benq monitors are all around 24 inches). When using a gaming monitor you need a high end video card such as a Nvidia 580, 680 or AMD 6970, 7970 video card(s) etc.. My BenQ monitor can display 4:3 resolutions, 16:9 resolutions and 16:10 resolutions as well. IPS and VA Panel LCDs are better for picture quality, IPS being the best. but you lose faster response time. So for best Native Resolution for a Gaming Monitor or any monitor 1920 X 1080 ( 16:9 ) would be the best. Your pictures may be in a ratio not at 16:9 therefore when using 16:9 monitor it will interpolate your pictures to 16:9 therefore distorting them, pictures taken in other ratio should be shown on monitor with proper ratio. Also the Native Resolution of monitor will be resolution with the best picture quality, providing that the images were also done in that resolution. Do you really need a gaming monitor... maybe not unless you do some hardcore gaming, maybe you just need a monitor with the same resolution that your pictures were taken in...

What's the difference between the LCD and the old ones monitor? How fast does the computer spoil our eyes?

Domino

I would like to know the difference between the LCD monitor and the old ones, then i'm wondering if my eyes will be spoiled by computer cause i spend sometimes in computers,if so how fast can it spoil my eyes??

Answer
Flatscreens and LCDs certainly do provide a clearer picture, and I do prefer to use them over CRTs except when using my 3D goggles which only work on CRT monitors. If you plan on watching a lot of movies or playing games on your computer, then an LCD is worthwhile, purely for the quality of picture.

Generally, computer use will NOT affect your eyes. I've been staring into a computer screen for the better part of hmm... about 700,000 hours over 12 years. Probably a lot more, definitely not any less.

Most of that screen time was spent in front of CRT monitors. I only started to experience problems with reading about 2 years ago. My optomitrist says this was more due to having a lazy eye as a child that wasn't picked up. I now use glasses for reading books but can get by fine without them normally. If it were true that my eyesight had been affected by CRT use, then I would expect my dominant eye to be just as, or more, troubled as my non-dominant eye. However I still maintain perfect vision in that dominant eye, even though I use both to look at a screen. Eye problems run in my family, so all things considered, I don't think there's much of a correlation.

I know people who've spent just as long in front of computers as I have and they can see perfectly, if not better than most. Skin is also unaffected, but can get a bit blotchy if you stay up all night on the computer... as it will if you stay up all night doing anything else.
The other thing that makes me suspicious of CRTs causing eye problems is that when you use a computer your eyes get a good work out, reading small print, large print, looking here looking there.

If you're concerned about eye strain, try turning down the glare on your monitor (brightness or gamma) and switch to a less goudy colour scheme (ie no bold reds and contrasting greens). If you are further concerned, try doing simple eye exercises such as focusing on your finger close in and then far out, with each eye, one at a time.

How can I increase the font size on my Yahoo Games spades tables?

gaming monitor glasses image

Kimberly

I can increase the font size anywhere else, including in the game room. But the words, buttons, and comments on the table itself are very small and I have a great deal of difficulty reading them. None of my usual tricks for enlarging screen sizes seems to help. Any suggestions?
It was very kind of you to give me such an extensive and detailed answer, Cube! I am opting to download a free magnifier so that I can use it in the lobby to see which tables are rated games without squinting. Thank you!

Answer
1. You're right about the usual tricks not working: Ctrl & + or -, or Ctrl & mousewheel up/down do the trick on browser windows, but not on 3rd party windows.

2. You can use the magnifying glass, supplied by microsoft, accesible by clicking start > all programs > accessories > accessibility > magnifying glass.
This displays a small window anywhere you choose, with the text around your cursor displayed.
If your monitor screen size is large enough, there should be plenty of room at the side of the table to position this window.
So, for example, if you set the magnification to 3 times, and make the 'magnifying window' a size of 300 x 300 pixels, it will display the 100 x 100 pixel area around your cursor magnified 3 times.

3. You can use other more user friendly on-screen magnifiers. Just do a Google search for 'Magnifying glass free download'. There are some which display the magnified area around your cursor exactly where your cursor currently is: this gives the appearance of using a 'real magnifying glass over your screen. I use MZoom and BSMag, but there are similar programs which may be even more suitable.

4. Again, if you go to start > all programs > accessories > accessibility > accessibility wizard, you can reduce your screen resoloution, make the text larger.

5. Specialist programs. There are programs available, such as the notorious 'card counters'. What these sort of programs do is read the text of the cards as they are played and display (in a separate window) the cards played and available in a different format. e.g.....
S: AK98 H:Q742 etc etc
These are all displayed in a graphical manner of the authors choosing, and are relatively easy to make. So, if you know a programmer, he could make some such program for you.

6. Other programs. It is also fairly easy to replicate certain controls on the Yahoo interface, and reproduce them in 'Chameleon' fashion to blend in with your window.
What does this mean in English?
Basically your Yahoo interface consists of a window with a blue left hand side, a yellow background, a picture of a table, a chatbox and listbox (players names at the right corner). Your 'controls' are the buttons on the blue part, and pictures (cards which you click) on the table picture.
It is easy to make a display of the buttons with larger fonts, and have this 'control panel' displayed anywhere you choose; and if identical in shape and colour, it could be displayed on top of the original buttons in a manner to blend in with the Yahoo interface. So, you click on your new buttons (with large writing), and the program sends a click to the corresponding original buttons.
The variable controls, such as the chatbox and list box would be harder to replicate, as the text changes from time to time: whilst it is feasible to read the text, enlarge it, and reproduce it somewhere, it would be a CPU and memory consuming task.
Other variable features, such as players names are easier to adjust.
It is also quite easy to change the colour of the fonts or background colour. Anything is possible.
If you email me a screenshot of your table, and amend it using Paintbox to show what sort of display you would like, I can probably make something to help you.

Will 3d projectors support ps3 3d games when the update is released?

Will 3d projectors support ps3 3d games when the update is released? Also has anyone currently got a 3d projector & how worth while would it be to get one considering the upcoming rise of 3d games & films?

Answer
yes and to give the perfect example go to the link i provided below and click on FAQ. The PJD6531w is 3d ready projector that i plan on purchasing and i've been researching my 3D possibilities for about 6 months now. A lot of people are completely unaware there are a wide range of different 3D options on the market today such as Nvidia 3d vision, Iz3D, 3D ready monitors and projectors. Practically all you have to do is get XpanD's x102 or x103 universal glasses which are 3D DLP ready which means they are compatible with any 3D ready DLP tv or projector, turn the 3d option on your projector, make sure you have the 3d activated in the game menu and on ps3 output settings also. that's it. I've included more links to make sure you get all the info you may need.
