Computer monitor for gaming?

Could someone list a good monitor(s) for gaming based on price.
I'm very interested in the new IPS panel type, however usually these give a 8ms response rate (Which isn't that poor for gaming?)

Would I be better off getting a tn monitor with a 2/1 ms response rate or a IPS monitor?

Will NOT be using 3d. Not at all interested especially if it makes monitor more costly
Screen size should be 20-24 inches. 24-27 inch monitors you can show too, but not as interested
All of the monitor top 10 generic lists I find rank the Viewsonic VX2453MH-LED 24-Inch Ultra-thin Widescreen LED Monitor great, however with this being a TN panel, i dislike the darkness you see when looking at it from a poor angle (I plan on laying on my bed sometimes to watch movies, bed is lower than level of monitor)

if you want a gaming monitor, you dont need a super ultra epic high end monitor. a game will look great on a standard monitor as long as it's 1080p

I just built a computer that I will use for gaming and working (I'm an economics student), and I'm looking for a monitor. I will probably run two at some point. What are the advantages of an IPS monitor? Everyone says they are necessary for gaming nowadays, what tangible difference will I see? I am looking in the 22-23 inch range, sub-$200. Asus seems to have a lot on Newegg, but I notice that many non-IPS LED monitors sell for about the same price. Are they worth paying more for? Or would a similar LED with better contrast, lower ms, ect.... get the job done just as well? Recommendations are welcome!

Anyone who can explain this to me will get a quick 10.

In general, IPS is better for color accuracy and wider viewing angles. IPS are good all around monitors with little weakness. TN is better for gaming. Not that IPS is necessarily bad for gaming, they are just not quite as responsive as TN monitors. TN also has much worse viewing angles and limited color depth. If you will only be gaming, I would go TN. But if you need a monitor good for gaming as well as movies, photo editing, browsing, etc., IPS would be better.

How fast is the fastest refresh rate for any computer monitor at a decent resolution, such as 1280 x 1024 or larger? I am not talking about response time, that is not the same as refresh rate. Thanks.

My Pro Gaming Monitor ( BenQ XL2410T ) has a Native Resolution of 1920 x 1080 , @ 2 ms and @ True 120 Hz. This monitor was co designed with HeatoN and SpawN and a gaming company named Zowie. True real gaming monitors do not have IPS or VA panels, they use TN.

Anything that is below 16 ms is good, depending on what you want to do with it. Don't be fooled by the timings the manufacturer says it has, because in most cases it's pure fiction (they don't measure the real response time)..
It depends on the matrix it's using.. For example a TN matrix has the fastest response time (an average of 6 ms) while the most "lazy" are the IPS type (around 25 ms), but they offer other advantages like better color range, almost perfect visualisation angles..
Word of caution: Those LCD's that say they have a 2ms response time, they actually use a built-in function called RTA (response time accelerator) to achieve this. The downside is a more pronounced bleeding effects and lesser viid colours (which can be easily seen when scrolling a text document for example). So again, no LCD until now does actually have native 2 ms response time...

It actually gets a lot more complicated in the different types of panels and lighting. Most LCD monitors today are LED backlit. They used to be fluorescent tube called CCFL. There are a few CCFL still remaining. LCD is a screen of tiny dots called pixels that change color. To see them you need a backlighting. If the backlight is fluorescent that is CCFL-LCD. If the backlight is LED it is LED-LCD.
They are both LCD.

Now, about various types. The fluorescent tubes can be two or four tubes. The LED can be edge-lit or backlit behind the screen. Backlit is better than edge-lit, but backlit is usually large panels only.

Then there is the true LED displays, like here in Las Vegas, and at some stadiums. They are very expensive and there were TVs from Sony made up of lots of little colored LEDs. Those are not LCD at all. They are LED TVs and displays.

Then there is IPS vs TN Panel. TN Panel is cheaper. The best TN panel can be faster frequency and color change Grey to Grey called GTG in milliseconds for how fast the pixels change color. The TN panel is generally better for gaming if it is a 2ms grey to grey or a faster frequency. The IPS panel is much better as a television set or when people are watching from many angles. In gaming you sit right in front of the screen.

So, there are actually many different monitor types and you only refer to the backlighting type.
