Ok so I am looking for a monitor to use for playing a game on my computer. However, I would also like to have an hdtv monitor to play my Xbox 360 on from time to time. So, I started looking and lcds seem to be alot cheaper. I heard there is a Xbox 360 VGA HD/AV cable for about $40US. I am assuming from the comments this allows for HD with an LCD. Anyone know if I bought one of these and an LCD monitor if I would recieve the same clarity or definition as an HDTV?

Answer
Standard PC monitors have been capable of displaying HD quality resolutions for years before HD was the rage for TV.

The same goes for LCD monitors.

The issue I have is that the VGA HD/AV cable you are talking about might not be of the highest quality and therefore may effect the image quality some, but not much.

You might want to simply look into a LCD television. Most of these are fully capable of doubling as a PC monitor.

1080p HDTV as computer moniter vs. 720p?

Sanh L

will it matter much if i choose between the 1080p HDTV and 720p HDTV to use it as a computer screen to play pc games, watch downloaded blu-ray movies, and watch tv. I have a vizio 32''. I chose the 1080p for 150 dollars more then the 720p. Should I return it and get the 720p?

Answer
Since you're using the display as a computer monitor, I'm assuming that you're sitting closer to it than you would if it was being used as a TV. I once had vizio 42" 720p and i upgraded last year to the vizio 42" 1080p. Despite what many people say, i've noticed a HUGE difference in picture quality when playing my xbox 360. (and that's sitting much farther away from the screen than you probably are) You made a good investment seeing that the HD market is slowly leaning toward the 1080p native format for media. When using an HDTV as an all-media display, you will definitely be able to discern the difference in picture quality between the two sets. Rest assured that you won't regret dropping the extra $150 on the nicer set.

Xbox Slim 250gb vs PC gaming rig?
Pros and cons of each, I am willing to spend 1.5k on a completely new pc rig including kb/mouse, OS, etc.

What are the pros and cons of each? Strictly gaming of course.

Thanks! =)

Answer
What games are you interested in playing? Because that's really what this question is going to boil down to. If you like PC exclusive games then that's your answer isn't it?

But if it's mainly stuff that's available on both the PC and the 360, then I'd say go with the 360 and get a monitor that has a HDMI input (or just get a nice HDTV and play on your couch.) You'll save $1200 right there, and that'll buy you a lot of games. Furthermore, unlike the PC, you can buy and sell used games.

The only games that will really take advantage of a new gaming rig are going to be the top of the line first person shooters at ridiculously high resolution and whatnot. The 360 will still get many of those titles, but only go up to 720p for the most part. However if that's good enough for you, why blow the extra bucks on a PC when you aren't going to really use its extra features?

Ok, sure, the PC is still king when it comes to MMO-RPGs like WoW, and RTS' like Starcraft 2 (due in July). However neither of those need anything close to a top of the line PC.

Of course, there's nothing to say you can't buy both. Maybe skimp on the video card in the PC for now, and upgrade it later on when the latest cards drop to $100 or so 6 months from now.

Flatscreen TV vs LCD monitor?

I have a great offer for a 40" LCD (NEC) PC monitor that I want to use for TV, games and DVD player. I have heard that PC monitor's actually have higher capabilities than an HDTV, is this true? (For high def I would need a tuner anyway, so I'm not worried that a PC monitor doesn't have a built in tuner). Your input is appreciated!

Answer
The only LCD monitors with "higher capabilities" than HDTVs are the 30-inch WQXGA monitors, which have 2560x1600 resolution. HDTVs top out at 1920x1080 (aka 1080p High Definition), which is what most computer monitors top out at as well.

So either one is fine, really, unless you want very high resolution, in which case you need a WQXGA monitor.
