Answer
A hologram is based on a physical characteristic of the properties of light and the interference of light waves. A "hologram effect" is what Hollywood tells us a hologram is. Hollywood tells us that a hologram is a 3D projection of an object (usually fully animated) into 3D space...into air. This is simply not the case for true holograms though. For a hologram, the image is stored on film or a holographic plate and you must be looking into it the whole time. The 3D image is an illusion as it never leaves the plate. You can not project something onto air. While there has been some research into creating computer genereated and animated holograms, at this point they are still pretty static(non moving). A hologram can be thought of as a photo that the image changes according to the angle you look at it from. This fact alone can create a 3D effect through motion paralax but because 2 eyes are viewing from 2 different angles you also see a steroscopic view truly creating the illusion that the image is 3D and floating in front of or behind the plate. But like a photo though, if you turn the plate 90 degrees (flat to your eyes) you will NOT see the image floating above or below the plate.

The terms "hologram" and "holographic" are also used pretty loosly in the media and for marketing. For example, the CNN "hologram" wasn't a hologram at all, but instead just special effects. The "holographic" reporter was not projected in the studio at all (like they said) but instead was only created digitally and added to the camera footage from the studio. There has also been some news reports of touchable holograms. While the touchable part is pretty neat and could certainly be added to a hologram, the video they show to demonstrate it is just using a curved mirror and a regular PC monitor to create the effect in a similar way to SEGA's old "hologram" time traveler video game. Again, the news reports made no mention of this and simply called it a hologram, which again, is not true.

In other words, many people have no idea what a "hologram" really is and are fooled by holywood and the media...who also seem to have no idea what a hologram really is.

I want to buy a new LCD monitor.I am confused of which one to buy. Please let me advice which one be better.I also want to know whether i should go for "wide" screen or normal type.If you can tell me the advantages and disadvantages it would be fine. FYI I am a normal user (no gaming) may be sometimes watch movies.

Thanks in Advance

Answer
A 4:3 (non-widescreen) LCD may be more useful for general internet browsing and word processing, since not many websites or word documents are laid out to fully utilize widescreens. Take Yahoo answers for example (there are lots of wasted space on the sides).

If you want to use your screen for watching movies, a 19" widescreen offers for more luxurious viewing, albeit at a higher price (+20 or 30 dollars more). There are no real disadvantages between the 2, since your uses may vary, and you may not watch movies that much on your PC.

However, a 19" undoubtedly offers better value than a 17" screen, when you take screen sizes vs price into account.
The price gradient gradually curves upwards as you increase the size of LCD panels from 17 ~ 22 inches. 19 inches is considered the "standard" size today, and any sizes bigger than 19 shows a large jump in price. My advice is to just pay a little more and get the 19" over the 17".
