gaming monitor dvi or hdmi image
Ya
what kind of lcd monitors are suitable for ps3 gaming? just need to make sure it has a dvi or hdmi port right? and make sure it is hdcp compliant right? is the aspect ratio important? what about things like 720p etc
if a monitor supports only 1280x1024 resolution, which is 4:3 (right?), is it still compatible with ps3 gaming?
Answer
It should be HDCP compliant and ideally have a HDMI input, but DVI will work as well. If it only has VGA input (almost all new monitors now have at least one digital input) then you will need to use a transcoder box.
Many PS3 games are in 16:9 widescreen, so ideally you would want a monitor in that aspect ratio. Any resolution should look fine, but 1920x1080 resolution is needed to fully resolve every pixel in 1080p games. Anything higher than 1920x1080 is unnecessary and may actually degrade picture quality.
Fast response time is an important specification on LCD/LED monitors as well. Ideally, it should be no greater than 5 milliseconds.
LED monitors offer better contrast and color, but are more expensive than conventional LCD monitors.
A SXGA (1280x1024) monitor should be able to play the games, but you will either have letterboxing (black bars at the top and bottom) or a vertically stretched picture. SXGA monitors can display 720p perfectly. Set the aspect ratio of the game to 4:3 or Full if possible. Note that many LCD SXGA monitors are actually 5:4 aspect ratio.

How much does an extended display affect gaming performance?
William D
I currently have a GTX 650 Ti SSC 2GB graphics card. I am using the HDMI and DVI output to a monitor and TV (respectively). I game on the monitor. I have a window open on the TV (extended display) to view a camera that refreshes every 1 second, loading a small picture each time.
The background changes every 10 seconds.
The games I play are in fullscreen and I have to do a windowed fullscreen to play (currently BioShock Infinite and Warface). I get decent froms (~50-60) with the two displays.
I would like to know: HOW MUCH DOES HAVING THE SECOND DISPLAY AFFECT PERFORMANCE?
Answer
Not much effect at all...
