Would getting a monitor with a higher native resolution such as a 22" 1680 x 1050 widescreen make games look sharper? My current monitor is a 17" 1280 x 1024 resolution. My 8800 gt says it supports 2560 x 1600.
Will it actually make games look sharper, or is it going to be the same since it's more pixels, but it's also a bigger screen so I'm assuming it needs those pixels to fill it... so it's not like they're going to be more compact or anything. I'm not totally sure how resolution works in relation to in-game picture quality. Could some one give a short explaination if it does in fact improve picture quality?
I was lookin' at this monitor specifically: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009094
Yes, but if I lower the resolution, it will be less pixels trying to fill the same size viewing area. If I got a monitor that supports a higher resolution, then I'd have more pixels, but the viewing area also must increase (to say, 22") - which means those pixels won't be as packed together as if that level of pixels could fit on my 17". I'm probably misunderstanding the idea of resolution. I have it in my mind that the quality of the picture would be determined by the amount of pixels packed onto the screen in relation to the size of the viewing area...
Answer
It will make the game look sharper, because, as you should know, in the game options, you can change the resolution of the monitor. To show you whether it would be sharper or not, give this a shot. Change the options in the game to display at a lower resolution, such as 1024 by 768. Or even lower. Play the game as you normally would and compare the resolution to the 1280 by 1024. If you do not see a visible difference in between those, then you should reconsider purchasing a new monitor. Then again, as most gamers would agree, the bigger the better, so a 5 inch increase to your monitor would make it look larger, and to some people...better!
In the end, the higher the resolution, the sharper, more clear, the image will be, and a larger screen will be a very good choice for playing games.

Gaming resolution , . . . ?
Sek
1366x768 resolution and running everything at max using gtx 460, like crysis 2, but im told im not maxing the games out as the resolution is bad, personally i think its a beast when games are maxed... is there much difference? , my monitor doesnt go any higher.
Running on a 19 inch monitor.
Answer
Depends on several factors:
Screen size. A 19 inch monitor that resolution will have very small pixels. A 27 inch will have larger pixels and seem not as detailed.
Viewing distance. The 19 and the 27 will look the same if you look at the 27 from 1.5X farther away. Your eyes will see the same detail.
Visual acuity. If you have 20/20 uncorrected, you will see more detail on anything.
