Gaming computer quality?

[killjoy]

My friend offered me his old desktop. I want to know how well this machine will run modern games (Fps on skyrim, bf3, mw3, or even older games such as cod4 and cs:s) and if anything is missing, what questions to ask him about it. Also try to tell me how much I should pay for it. He offered to sell for around 400-450. Tell me a reasonable price.

CPU- AMD Phenom II X3 720 Triple core processor running @ 2.8ghz
Memory: 8 gb DDR3 ram
NVIDIA Geforce GT 520 1 gb graphics
1 TB of hard drive 7200 rpm
If any upgrades are currently needed or suggested, please include what it is and how much it will cost to replace it. I'm not sure of the quality of this graphics card or how much it would run me up for a new one, so try to tell me about it.
Will it run Arma2 and Dayz mod for it?

Answer
It is fine for most older games
BUT
that NVidia Geforce GT520
is an EXTREMELY low power NVidia card for
a gamer. For modern games
you would need to buy at least
an NVidia Geforce GT550 or
jump to the AMD Platform and
get an AMD Radeon HD 7750
or higher. If you get the Nvidia
card, you may need a more powerful
power supply, at least 500 watts.
Your computer may have as little as a
300 watt power supply. Because of all
these considerations, it is not worth $400.

I think the 3 core processor is fine, a C+/B- grade
for games since games
draw on the graphics more than they draw on the
CPU, however you can get faster 4 core to 8 core
processors to day with speeds up to 3.6 gigahertz.

That 520 graphics card gets an F grade, perhaps an
F minus for gaming performance.

If you have a licensed copy of Windows 7 it is worth
$240. If there is no Windows license or only Windows XP
then the computer is worth $170 or less.

For $450, I would try to build an intel i3 or i5 box or an AMD Phenom 6
core, get a 500 watt power supply, almost any full ATX case, a basic motherboard
that is AM3+ if AMD or socket 1155 if Intel and the AMD HD7750 or Nvidia GEforce 550Ti
and I would seek an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium or professional.
{You could skip the Windows if you download the Windows 8 Release Preview and install it,
usable for free, BUT it expires on 1/15/2013 and Windows 8 has a metro interface that is
tough to adjust to.

I'm really low on budget so, my max is about 500 euro's, not sure how many USD that is. But i really wanna build a game PC with atleast 70 fps on minecraft, i never builded a game PC myself and i don't know how to do it, i've looked up some tutorials on youtube but not every game PC case, motherboard is the same, and i can't find tutorials under 500 euro's. that show you how to build it, not what processors or motherboards you should use or whatever. So to clear everything up; I am not into building a game PC myself if i don't find a good tutorial with the same items i'm going to use. Or i'll just buy a PC that is already build by a proffesional. ( Laptop is good to but i guess PC's are better)

Thanks if you help me out. :)

I'd like to give out my skype to the ones that are into helping me.

Would this be a great gaming computer for 2013?

Kevin

I've been considering on buying, or building a computer for me. I am a big gamer and have had all my games on my Inspiron 14R 4010N and well with new games coming out it is behaving like a piece of crap. So this time I want to go with a desktop, will this run all my games and future ones? My types of games are Modern Warfare 2-3, Black Ops II, Battlefield 3, DayZ. I want to know if it will handle it fine, not looking for crazy insane lifelike quality of my games just something between sweet and eh.

This this is the computer:

Answer
Keep looking. You've landed firmly in "eh." AMD Quad-Core FX-4100 processor 3.60GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GT 610. A very low-end CPU paired with the absolute lowest end dedicated card that Nvidia makes. At least the two are a good match. Neither one is good. If $500 is your budget, you're going to be hard-pressed to get anything above .. eh. You really need to be in the range of $700-800 and even that's probably just above mediocre.

Gaming computer help?

James

I know I asked this before but I need help with choosing the right desktop or laptop for everyday use and gaming. I play a lot of simulation games such as the new simcity game and 18 wheels of steel. I don't need something outrageous.

Answer
If you need a laptop, don't go over an entry level gaming machine for what you describe. You won't need it. I don't believe the sim games will need the graphics power of something more powerful.
Personally, for the cost of a mid level gaming laptop, I would spend $600 for a really hot desktop and then pick up a $300-$350 laptop for mobility - something light with good battery - I have lugged heavy laptops on travel, and I would get choose something lighter anymore.

Take a look at these rankings:
http://blog.laptopmag.com/best-worst-notebook-brands-2013/3

You can look at some gaming machines here:
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/landing_pages/ideapad/gaming-pcs
http://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/Gaming_Products/

Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

Dell makes Alienware and they are not worth the money charged.
Acer makes Gateway. You'd have to pay me to use one of their machines.
Sony hardware has generally been good, but they are notorious for putting huge amounts of crapware/bloatware on machines and gathering information on their consumers without their knowledge or permission.
Toshiba has bottomed the rankings. Personally, I have used them and never had a problem, but that does not appear to be the case any more.

What computer parts do I need to build one myself?

best gaming computer case 2013 image

Alvin

If you can give me suggestions & information about the gaming computer spec i have below that I want to build myself. PLEASE, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND OPINIONS!!!

This is what I have in mind:

Case: Reasonable Price on a Full Tower

Processor: Intel® Core⢠i7 4820K Processor (4x 3.70GHz/10MB L3 Cache)
(TBH, something at least 3.0+ghz or what do you guys recommend)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 -- 4x PCI-E 2.0 x16
(I wanted something that can do up to 3-SLI/3 Graphic cards for future purposes or to hear your opinions)

ram: 16GB 2x8GB DDR3-2133 Memory Module
(I really would like to stick to 8GB Sticks only, would love you hear your opinions and does it make any difference on brand?)

graphic card: GeForce GTX 760 Ti (OEM)
(I was gonna buy one now, and in a year or two later I can buy more if my graphic card cant support the game, am I doing this right to save money and to keep it up to date with future games?)

Fan: I REALLY DO NEED HELP, TRYING TO AVOID LIQUID COOLER?
(I REALLY NEED HELP HERE)

Hard Drive: 500GB at least
(I've been looking into SSD, but they are so expensive for 500gb...
I also read that it's good for gaming? But it only makes a difference in the loading screen not game play.. if someone knows anything about it? Thanks)

CD/DVD: Some Random reason price one with blue ray
(Any recommendation?)

Wifi/Bluetooth: Any some reasonable quality internal thing.
(Any recommendation?)

Media Card: Internal Media card reader
(Any recommendation?)

power supply: some kind of 1200 waltz power supply
(I dont know if any brand or stuff makes a big difference...)

PLEASE, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND OPINIONS!!!
This is my first time...The only website I know of is newegg.com and if anyone knows a really detailed guide.
thank you!

Answer
What are you going to do with it? I hope not only gaming?

SSD's are only good for acces/transfer times.. so it will only help at loading times but ofcourse not in the actual gameplay. It will also help to keep windows snappy and boot it up fast. Just get a 120GB disk to put windows+programs on it plus a 1 or 2 tb hard drive.
Bluray drives are expensive and useless.. it's 2013 and optical media are dead. A DVD player might be useful only for drivers and os installation.

And in my opinion: Don't go for multiple videocards. Selling the old graphics card and buying a single new one is in my opinion almost always a better option. That way you get less heat, newer technology and no need for expensive psu's and motherboards.

What parts would you need to build a Gaming Computer in 2013?

Cameron Co

I'm sitting here trying to figure out what I would need for a Gaming Computer in 2013, because all the tutorials and questions are out of date. I'm looking to build my own, and . But what I'm also looking for, is to be able to probably run... let's say Watch Dogs on Ultra when it comes out. Because I can't figure out if I should get a motherboard, but worry it wouldn't fit in a case, or something like that. So I am basically looking for ways to know I won't run into this problem. Money isn't a problem with me. Throw whatever you got, please c:

Answer
Not too difficult. The old tutorials should still basically apply. Just make sure your motherboard and processor are compatible. They need to have the same type of socket. For example if you want to use an Intel Core i5 with a 1156 socket you will need to make sure the motherboard is also Socket 1156. It should plainly tell you this in the product description. You can also find a motherboard you prefer and then look on the manufacturer's website for a user manual or spec chart showing which exact processors are supported. Most motherboards are going to be Micro ATX or full ATX. A full ATX motherboard will fit in any mid tower or full tower computer. A MicroATX motherboard will fit in nearly every conventional computer case available. Other than that, just make sure you get an adequate power supply.

Does the Alienware X51 work on a regular computer moniter?

I've been looking to start saving for the Alienware X51 as a gaming pc and there's a bunch of stuff everywhere about using it in your living room. Can you just use it on a regular computer monitor like you would with an Acer computer or something? If not, what are some other gaming pc's that can run CoD and BF games. Or, what are some pc's that you recommend more than the X51. I would not want to go much over the $1000 US dollar range, so keep it around there. Also, I want to run dual monitors, one for gaming and one for web browsing and stuff. Thanks to any answers :D
Also, if you suggest something else, I would want an i7 processor, a good Nividia graphics card, and a really good amount of memory so I never have to worry about running out. Thanks again to anyone who answers :D

Answer
You can connect it to anything which has a compatible connection. Does the laptop have HDMI? then you can connect to an HDMI tv or monitor. The same for DVI, Analog, or Display Port.

However, if you want your machine sooner than later and would prefer not to over pay, please read on:

What is the highest quality, used laptop I can buy for $500?

Soliel

I am a junior in a college-based high school and I desperately need a new laptop. However, I don't know much about computers, and I need help in determining which one would be best for me. My budget is $500, but I don't want to purchase a new computer. I would rather spend some time on Craigslist, Amazon, or Ebay, and find a high-quality, used computer---even if it is an older model---for a great deal. Don't underestimate the great deals you can find, either. Sometimes you can find items for 40% or more under their company's selling price.

This isn't a necessity, of course, but I do appreciate style. Macbooks are beautiful, and there are models from 2008-2009 on sale within my budget, but I have heard too many bad things about them to risk purchasing one. One thing that I really love about them, however, is how they are made. I want a computer that isn't plastic or cheaply made. This is very important, because the computer I have now is completely plastic, and as a result, falling to pieces. Not to mention, it doesn't look very nice. The computer I am looking to buy right now I hope will last at least three years. Ideally, I want a computer that will work for three years as well as not be outdated in three years. I also want decent speakers and graphics. I'm not a gamer, but I love gaming computers. They have large storage, great visuals, and impressive sound capabilities. This is my ideal, but I understand if there isn't a computer within my budget that could reach that standard. Basically, I want a laptop that can provide the basics I need for school (just able to run the Microsoft programs, good for wi-fi, webcam), can provide extra entertainment features, and will last for a while.

If you can, please recommend what laptop you think I could possibly find within my budget that would be best suited for my wants and needs. Also, if you have a computer in mind that fits my specifications but isn't in my budget, list it anyway. I'm telling you, there are great deals out there.

Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

In my experience, two of the most dependable lines of machines are the Lenovo Thnkpads and the HP EliteBook. These are both business class machines. Business class machines are typically more solidly built than their consumer counterparts. The reason? A business would rather pay and extra $150 - $200 for a machine they KNOW won't break down and even if it does, the business class support is usually next business day repairs. The reason is that if a business laptop goes down on someone, they could easily be out a couple hundred dollars per day that it is down along with the possibility of losing business. Consumer machines are typically not being used for mission critical activities and if they are down for a week or so, no big deal. As far as I can tell, the Samsung Series 7 and Series 9 machines are also business class hardware.

Dell makes Alienware and they are not worth the money charged.

Acer makes Gateway. You'd have to pay me to use one of their machines.
