Does the quality of the motherboard matter in a gaming computer?

Jack LaPla

I'm just wondering if it's necessary to spend lots of money on a motherboard when I found one that's compatible with I need it to be compatible with. Specifically I'm deciding what motherboard I should get that would work with an amd fx 8120 processor and a GeForce GTX 460 graphics card. I've narrowed my focus down to two main candidates, the ASUS M5A99X EVO or the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3. So, my question is, if the motherboard is compatible with everything you want it to be compatible with, does quality/price matter? And, if you think these motherboards are good choices which do you think will be better? Thanks in advance!

Answer
I think the quality of motherboards dont directly matter on gaming performance. But the motherboards should be compatible with your main gaming hardwares i.e, CPU, GPU and Memory. So you can say Motherboards indirectly interfere on gaming performance. Have you ever seen Motherboard requirements on any game? So, dont look for a gaming Motherboard. You should buy a Motherboard which is compatible with latest gaming hardwares. Google for Asus or Gigabyte.
Thanks.

inexpensive- good quality gaming computer?

Game lover

Can someone tell me the least expensive gaming computer they can think of that can play high-end games very smoothly such as WoW, Aion, and most importantly the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic.

I dont know much about computer specs so thats why im asking you guys out there what you think.

Answer
Forget about mac's and linux ha-ha lol. You need a gaming computer not facebook hogger. Good price range for gaming computers is $900-1200 - here you will get nice performance and will not overpay too much for what you don't need.
Surprisingly Athlon II X3 and X4 processors show good results in gaming if you want to go fora low budget. Little bit higher will be Phenom II X4 (like 955 is a good one) and Intel Core i5 750, even better but more costly will be i7 setups (both LGA1156 and 1366 sockets). I would stick with i5 750 or Phenom X4.
As for the memory - 4GB is enough today, not much performance increase from 8GB and RAM is expensive now. For LGA1366 Core i7 of course 6GB triple channel is a RAM of choice.

Videocard - will have significant influence on gaming. I would recommend at least GeForce GTS 250 or ATI 5750, ATI 5770, 5830. No need to shoot for GTX 470 or similar in your case.

Power supply - at least 550W of reliable brand like Antec or Cooler Master
Good case with good cooling (antec 300, Cooler Master Scout, ANtec 900...)

Hard drive does not matter - get what you feel you will need. 500GB usually enough

I am looking for a DESKTOP Gaming Computer that is $2000 and under, or would it be cheaper and better to build one myself with the parts?

Answer
Building is cheaper (usually) since you save on labor. But then again you can make a mistake and get a wrong parts, you can get DOA part and spend huge amount of time troubleshooting (since you have no replacements). Building yourself is fun but can be frustrating for the first time (and second...).
For under $2000 you can get absolutely the best computer and I mean one that will run all games on high settings and 1080p and decent FPS. It surely will be i5 2500K or 2600K, 8GB RAM, and really nice video card like ATI 6950 or Nvidia GTX 560 Ti and up. Check this computer:

What is the best website where I can customize my own gaming computer?

J Jackson

What is the best website out there that allows me to customize my own gaming computer. When I say "Best" website, I mean good quality company, reliable, good prices (not too worried about price, but better prices are good), and good customer service and stuff like that.
I will not buy separate parts and build the computer myself because I don't know how to do it and it will cost the same as buying a computer after hiring someone to do it for me anyway.

Answer
it wouldn't be the brightest option to buy a computer, but don't ignore me just yet. A good reliable place to buy a gaming computer is ibuypower.com, because they have great customer support. Also, it is hundreds less expensive than alienware. Now this is what I think you should do. Go to ibuypower.com, they have a custom build configurator that lets you choose which parts you want, print the sheet out, and buy those parts. This will work 100% of the time, because the parts you picked on the website are all compatible, and you can trust ibuypower.com, so you KNOW its compatible. Building a computer is not as hard as you think. Heck, my 12 year old cousin did it, and he's not the brightest person in school. I highly recommend doing some research on building computers on the internet before you jump the gun and decide to build/buy a gaming computer. Know what you're going into, and that your sure of your decision of buying vs. building. Building a computer would cost hundreds and hundreds less than actually buying a custom built gaming computer, and you already know that the parts are compatible because you used the custom build configurator. It's actually quite simple. Also, you can get parts for real real real cheap at newegg.com. Their prices will blow your mind, and they have a huge selection. Thanks for listening, and good luck with your computer!

What is a good quality gaming computer?

Greg Taylo

I am only looking for a computer to play World of Warcraft, and want to know what is a good gaming computer for my needs, at an affordable price. Thanks for your answers!

Answer
Alienware M11x awesome, no lagging, not even on the highest settings for WoW. my bro just got it, he says it is incredible. Its quite pricey though but hey if you want a good computer you have to be willing to pay the price. you have to buy the disc drive seperatley and you can even order it with WoW or one of the games listed alrady installed on it and of course there is a variation of different colors. it also can be programmed with up to 8gb for gaming and other software. Hope this helped :))
