Whats better value for money? Gaming PC?

Ross

Whats better value for money?

I like the sound of the Arbico Intel 4157 - Wolfdale Custom Built Gaming System (Can be found here - http://www.arbico.co.uk/Arbico-Intel-4157-Wolfdale-Custom-Built-Gaming-System-p-.html )

Or the Acer Aspire AX3990 ( Can be found here - http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/pi/223-2751672/Desktop-Computers/Acer-Aspire-AX3990-Intel-Core-i3-2100-3.1GHz-3GB-500GB-DVDRW-Win-7-Home-Premium-Product-Info )

If there's any other Desktop Computer at this price range, please tell me as i'm looking for a cheap-ish gaming Computer.

Answer
First computer has a very bad processor for gaming. RAM is OK, if you were to buy that then I would choose for the graphics card ATI HD6770. Very small hard drive.
Obviously go for the Windows 7 Home premium OS if you were going to buy this.

Second one has a better and newer processor, although the i3 is more for web surfing and multi-tasking.
Only has 3GB of RAM so that is not very good for gaming.
It has a bigger hard drive than the first one.
But the biggest let down is the Graphics, as this computer has Integrated graphics!
Integrated Graphics are most certainly not for gaming.

All in all the best value for money is the first one. But here is a real gaming PC that has ALOT better components than they do, and for only just a bit more money: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VIBOX-QC-FS-AMD-PHENOM-QUAD-CORE-ATI-HD-6450-8GB-RAM-WINDOWS-GAMING-PC-COMPUTER-/200665653719?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D4267359641331116686#ht_1804wt_1139

Or you can have this one, but it doesn't have a OS installed on the computer: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VIBOX-QC-Fe-AMD-PHENOM-QUAD-CORE-ATI-HD-6450-8GB-RAM-GAMING-DESKTOP-PC-COMPUTER-/220877911006?_trksid=p5197.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC.NPJS%26itu%3DI%252BUA%26otn%3D12%26pmod%3D200665653719%252B190596071937%252B400255909731%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D4267375560797216506#ht_1804wt_1139

Hope you choose wiseley!

Are computer games and the internet to blame for the ever decreasing standard of literacy among children?

A recent poll shows that UK children dropped from 3rd in the world to 19th in terms of literacy? Why is this?

Answer
Blaming technology for decreasing literature is a cop-out. Last I checked, using the internet involves a lot of reading. I would venture a guess that the average child with regular internet access reads more content than a child twenty years ago each day. They just read fewer books printed on paper.
Computer games probably contribute to obesity, but not likely to illiteracy, since they take the place of outdoor play.

The fault lies with schools, parents, societal values and social messages.
Educational standards have declined. This is no ones fault but the schools. (Not the teachers, but the schools as a whole.)
Parents, especially low income parents, have to work more, and spend less time reading to their young children. And the parents are often not terribly literate to start with. A recent study in the US found that less than 50% of Americans read for recreation. I imagine the figures in the UK are similar.
Society does not value intellectual pursuits. Society values money and power. While literacy and money and power are certainly connected, that is not always the message that comes across.
And there is the social messages that children get. When one knows that they will end up working in the factory just like their dad, there is far less incentive to pursue their studies.

What should I look for in a desktop computer?

David

I'm looking for a computer to stream videos, movies and surf online. I need it to be able to connect to the internet Wireless too. And if it could play blue ray movies that would be awesome! Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
Well, you want to focus on the wireless or internet cards in the desktop, try and get a faster card using 802.11 G or N, i cannot stress the G or N anymore, these are the best.
You want to get a fast router so when looking for a computer, you may want to upgrade your router, to make sure you get the best speeds possible to ensure a smooth internet experience. Also try looking for the best internet provider in your area to get fast speeds, so you may be able to stream full HD films to your desktop!
As for the Blu-Ray, you can either look for a desktop with Bluray built in, or you could just buy an internal blu ray player for around 50 pounds. This would go underneath your original dvd writers etc on the front of your desktop tower.
And with the desktop, I reccomend buying a nippy desktop, to future proof for a while, so ensure you buy a desktop with multiple cores in its processor, so look for words like "Dual Core" or "X2, X4" etc.
Have a look at non high street brand desktops, as these will give more "bang for your buck" and will be hand built and made in quality. Try Mesh. You can get a cheap build which gives you money to buy a Bluray drive.
http://www.meshcomputers.com/
take a look at their value desktops, for the 299 one you get a good set up with a 3.1GHz dual core (making it 6.2GHz) processor, also leaving room for a blu ray drive and a better wireless router.
For a router, i reccomend the "DrayTek Vigor 2110n" which is the best around under 100 pound at the moment, or if that is too expensive go for the "Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH" Just google them. The DrayTek is around 90 pound, and the Buffalo is 69.
as for the blu ray drive, you only pay alot if you want to WRITE blu rays, for a plain READER which means you have to use your dvd drives to write to dvd, but you cant use Blu Ray discs to write, you can get them cheap. Try amazon. Here is one for you:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SH-B083L-Blu-Ray-Reader-Lightscribe/dp/B002RTC46A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1281469927&sr=8-1
this one can also write dvds despite what i said above. and is only about 54 pounds! You just need the no how to install it internally, but this is easy, just yahoo answer it later, or google it.

Hope I have helped

EDIT - Also you may need to upgrade your graphics card, but all you need for blu ray is a cheap ATI HD Radeon 5450 which isnt good enough for gaming, but your not doing that are you?
Altogether, this makes your set up, if you buy the 299 desktop i reccommended from mesh, and the other hardware, minimally around 400 pound, or if you go for the more expensive router, then 450, not bad I think eh?
Another Edit - You only need the faster routers etc of yours isnt that fast at the moment, otherwise dont bother.

Any ideas for a budget gaming PC or where to buy it from?

I really mean budget! I have pretty much £300 for the desktop. I can go a bit over, maybe £350 if its worth it.

I understand that for this price the computer wont be amazing but where is the best value for money going to be? I mainly want it for Starcraft 2 so it needs to play this with no lag or rather, as little as possible.
I live in England which pretty much rules out ordering from the states. Any help is appreciated.

Answer
Recommended Specifications for playing Starcraft 2

Operating System

Windows Vista®/Windows® 7

Video

512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon® HD 3870 or better

Memory

2 GB RAM

I would go on Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008E3M23S/ref=s9_hps_bw_g147_ir05?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=8EB3C7E368564B508B16&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=289597847&pf_rd_i=428651031

and add this graphics card to it

http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Radeon-HD6570-Graphics-Passive/dp/B0052MJQN8/ref=sr_1_14?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1349713128&sr=1-14

That way you'll be able to play that game at least pretty well.

What motherboard should i use in a new gaming PC build?

Tom

I have a budget of £600 and at the very max £700.
I have chose an Intel i5 3570k Processor, and a Coolermaster Storm Enforcer case..

Which motherboard would be suited to me? I want to play games, and will choose a GPU in time.
I had my eye on the Asus-P8Z77-V Motherboard, but is it necessary?
Are there better suggestions on what to spend money on?

Cheers

Answer
Although parts have to be selected one by one, the key to the optimum build is the final total list. When you put more money into one part, there is less left for the other parts. Although not every available choice is listed, you can do well with
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/
where you can put in a total (or partial) list, and a permalink in the top left can be copied and shared. It changes with each change you make. It assures you get all the parts you need and does some compatibility checking. You need to decide on performance for the money, or future upgradability at a lower current performance. You need to choose quality/stability/reliability levels which at higher cost reduce the performance.
Generally, overclocking an i5 is not necessary until into the highest level of gaming. An i5-3470 is often a better value, and you can use the Intel cooler, or add a better one anyway like the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO. Without an aftermarket cooler, you cannot overclock the CPU. You would also need a Z77 or Z75 based motherboard to overclock. But, your total budget may aim towards a lower cost CPU and higher GPU for faster better gaming. You want to match your motherboard internal I/O to your case, and a case for long cards is helpful. The Storm Enforcer is an excellent case, among others. It has USB 3.0 x 2 (internal), USB 2.0 x 2, Audio x 1, Speakers x 1 Front Ports. So, your motherboard needs to have an internal USB 3.0 header.

£136 for the P8Z77-V is certainly nice, but you are running out of money fast.
£168 CPU, £25 CPU cooler, £66 case, about £40 for 2x4GB 1600 1.5V with heat spreaders and XMP ready CAS 9, say £127 HD 7850, £50 single rail 80 plus 500+Watt PSU good brand like Corsair or XFX, £50 1TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64MB cache HDD, £14 DVDRW, £68 Windows 7 64 bit, plus where do you stand with keyboard, mouse, audio output system, monitor? That's £744 in this list, with no SSD for either a WIndows OS load and work in process like a video editing before archiving and HDD interactive games or maybe Intel HDD acceleration SRT/RST or some combination by partitioning an SSD. You see, your choices are leading to an over-budget if you need everything. I think you need to evaluate your total set for maximum gaming. It is great to have a top level system, but it costs top level money.

Features of that motherboard -
Top 2 brand (Asus+Gigabyte are 1+2 about tied order), MSI+Asrock about tied 3+4, and look no deeper. Wi-Fi GO! - DLNA Streaming and Remote Desktop Made Easy, digital power, fast boot, LucidLogix Virtu MVP, 2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8) plus an extra PCIe x 16 you won't need, 4 SATA III 6Gb/s, Intel gigabit ethernet, Realtek ALC892 audio:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/printpage/Audio-Codec-Comparison-Table/520
plenty of USB including the internal USB 3.0 header, 4 system fan connectors

These will meet most of the parameters:
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#m=7,8,18,27&f=2&c=26,36,51,52&l=2&k=6,5,4,3,2&n=4&u=1&sort=a6
starting at £97.05
Everyone's "perfect" build at a price point is just a little different. I suggest you fill in all the parts and then adjust up and down. The build is 85% planning and 5% buying and 10% building.
I am sensing at an overview of your price,
i5-3470, the Storm Enforcer, maybe a motherboard under £120 chosen by YOUR preferences of features that should include SLI capable, Lucidlogix, at least 2 SATA III, USB 3.0 internal header, ATX size from a good brand. Almost the whole list above has that.
Show a whole build and ask for suggestions at about the same bottom line price.
