I spend a lot of time in front of my computers doing works and some games in my spare time. Iâve got blurry eyes lately and neck pain after long hours typing, reading and surfing the internet. People say that computer eye strain can cause nearsightedness and other eye damage. How can I avoid this problem ?

Answer
Computer monitor eye strain may bring headaches, eye stress, blurry vision, dry eye, develop nearsightedness, tiredness and pain in the neck and shoulders. It is suspected that heavy computer work can lead to glaucoma and other eye problems.

To avoid the above symptoms and risks, there are easy ways you can do to reduce computer visual stress and to avoid the pain and vision damage.

1. Adjust and use proper lighting.
Computer monitor eye strain is often caused by too much bright life. When you work on a computer, you should use lighting in the work place area only about half of the lights used in most offices.

2. Reduce the glare
Glare from walls and other gloss painted surfaces, as well as dazzling reflection from your computer screen can bring computer-related eye strain. To avoid these, you can put in an anti-glare screen on your monitor and you may want to repaint the walls with a darker color.

3. Change your monitor
If you can afford to buy a flat-screen computer monitor, your eyes will âappreciateâ it. The higher-imaging quality of these screens are much easier on the eyes, because the images have sharper edges, which contribute to the overall clarity of what youâre looking at onscreen, which in turn contributes to eye comfort.

4. Get frequent rests
To prevent computer monitor eye strain, you should take frequent breaks from your computer works. Most of eye experts suggests that eyes need to rest for 15 minutes during each two-hour period or for 10 minutes per hour of intensive work. A study found that computer workers who take short breaks are more productive than those who don't take breaks.

5. Exercise your eyes to reduce your risk of computer eye strain. Do some relaxing eye exercises like palming, thumb focusing and scanning. These eye exercises can help you to increase the flexibility of your eyeâs muscles and, lower computer eye strain effectively. Blink often if your eyes are dry. When staring at the monitor people would tend to blink less frequently, this will cause eye dry.

6. Adjust your computer properly. The ideal viewing distance is 20-24 inches. The correct viewing angle from the screen center is 10 to 20 degrees below eye level. However the ideal distance can vary with your size, height and posture.

7. Try to keep your wrists as straight as you can while typing. Use wrist support pads to keep your wrist comfortable and avoid any strain.

In fact, there is a number of eye-related problems that can contribute computer monitor eye strain. But don't rush out to buy glasses just in the hopes of relieving eye strain fast, because they may just worsen the eyeâs condition. Instead, choose to improve your vision naturally by following the right methods suggested by eye experts.

How can I have the power of a PC but the convenience of a laptop?

Joe F

What would it take to have a tower PC tucked away somewhere and have a laptop-type keyboard/monitor running it, either via wire or wireless? Basically, it would be nice to have an out of sight box doing all the hard work, and whatever is on your lap is just the input (keyboard and mouse) and output (monitor). Tower PCs are so much more powerful than laptops, but I don't want to be forced to sit at a desk.

Answer
Screen sharing like VNC or Remote Desktop or LogMeIn are possible from one machine to another, but they are slow - too slow for gaming.

You can look for Keyboard Video and Mouse extenders that allow you to run your monitor and keyboard at a distance from the machine. - this one will let you be 300 feet away but it costs $300 http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=87618

Watch out for limited resolution on the monitor because of bandwidth limits.

what is the best display cable on a monitor for gaming?

i'm in the market for a new monitor. i have one that's ok for gaming, but the refresh rate is a little low for me at only 60Hz, but that's kinda irrelevant. my question is: what is the best type of display cord to use for gaming? is it a DVI? VGA? HDMI? DVI to HDMI? DVI to VGA? which one is the best for the best look on screen when playing games?

Answer
There really isn't any real difference in video quality. DVI and HDMI video quality will be the same and they both use digital signals while VGA is analog. The main difference between DVI/HDMI and VGA comes when there is distortion in the signal. VGA will typically show color distortion while the other two will display "snow". If you are going to use very long cables, go for DVI/HDMI since VGA is a bit more prone to signal degradation over long distances(>20ft, although this is combated by a quality cable). HDMI has the bonus of carrying sound in the same cable but this isn't a big advantage in the PC gaming market. SImply get the cable that fits your GPU and display.

How hard would it be for NASCAR to detect frame or chassis alterations?

fluffy

NASCAR is kind of lame with their templates and specifications to how they think a race car is supposed to be. If a team wants to "try harder" to win why not just do it right. It just seems that racing has become a different kind of game

Answer
Surely they have ways of detecting if the cages are more flexible than others with machines that test stress wouldn't they. I read something to that extent somewhere. Can't find it right now.
------------------

What I read was they do check for certain tolerances.

Quote:
"One official measures the distance between the rear wheel and the bumper. Another places a template in the wheel well to check it. No less than three officials scan the car bumper to bumper with tape measures and devices to check for gaps between the template and the sheet metal".

also they still may be gathering data about the tolerances and how the cars reacts under normal racing conditions.

Quote:
"Obviously race cars twist and bend and move in a normal function of 500 laps or 500 miles," Darby said. "Part of what we're looking for and to understand is the amount of that movement and how much they return back to neutral, if you will, just through normal wear and tear, which helps us apply the tolerances to the certification program."
from March 3, 2007

So there may be a limited amount of data available for them to even measure/monitor the chassis very closely.

This passed weekend I played video games for 3 days straight. I know it's bad but I haven't played like that in a pretty long time. My headache started with a pain in back of my right eye and my entire right side of my head. I woke up this morning and my head hurts all around, especially the back and front of my head. I took an Advil but it doesn't go away. What should I do?

Answer
It could be a variety of things. If you play very intense games, it could be from tension/stress. It could also be eye strain. Have you had your eyes tested recently? Try adjusting the distance from your TV/monitor, and check the ergonomics of your setup. Eyes should be around level with close to the top of your screen, etc. You can check more online about that.

What is wrong with my connection speed and how can i fix it?

rich

-My internet service provider is optimum.
-I have a wireless router (purchased last year) and a modem (upgraded last year as well).

My actual internet seems to be fine but the problem is downloading, uploading, and playing online games (xbox live). My connection was great up until a week ago, where I began lagging in every online game I played, which was unbearable, and nearly impossible. I use Netflix frequently which seems to be very slow as well, along with downloading any program on my laptop (wont download), uploading videos to youtube (have done it once since the problem occurred but took about 5 hours+ to upload), and I really need to know what can possibly be done to fix this.

I have also tried testing my connection on sites such as speedtest.net and speakeasy.net and came to the conclusion that my ping is at 10ms, download speed is at .81mbps and my upload speed is at .06mbps. im not very tech savyy but im pretty sure that is not very good. any help would be great! thanks!

Answer
Ping is super.

Download and upload speeds suck, big time.

What speed are you paying for?

Optimum is a cable Internet provider, Most cable Internet plans are 10 Mbps+ with offerings in some areas in excess of 300 Mbps.

Unless that is a super budget 768 Kbps plan, You need to try and power cycle your equipment.

Connect a PC or laptop directly to one of the router LAN ports via Ethernet and follow these steps in this specific order.

1. Unplug power cables on the router and modem.

2. Plug in the modem and wait a minute or two to establish a Internet connection.

3. Plug in the router.

4. Reboot your computer to have the router DHCP service assign a new IP address to your computer.

5. You can test your Internet connection speed here: http://speedtest.net

If the Ethernet Internet connection works fine then try the wireless connections.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The connection may start at 54 Mbps and end up at less than 20 Mbps.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

As I described above wireless connection quality can vary dramatically, for gaming this can cause lag in online games. Your latency (ping) may be 30 ms and wireless interference could cause it to spike to 200 ms or more. Wireless connections also have more overhead involved in the transfer of data such as the encryption / decryption used for wireless security.

The best solution would be to use a wired (Ethernet) connection between your gaming device and the router.

If it is not feasible to run cables you have other options such as powerline network adapters You plug one in by the router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference.

In my opinion for a gaming connection I would run Ethernet or use powerline adapters.

However, if you need the wireless mobility there are various other ways to extend a Internet connection to areas with a weak wireless signal.

Devices such as wireless extenders that can expand your wireless range if need be. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06

The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. Some models include 4 Ethernet ports in addition to the wireless radio.

Good Luck...
