I spend a lot of time in front of my computers doing works and some games in my spare time. Iâve got blurry eyes lately and neck pain after long hours typing, reading and surfing the internet. People say that computer eye strain can cause nearsightedness and other eye damage. How can I avoid this problem ?

Answer
Computer monitor eye strain may bring headaches, eye stress, blurry vision, dry eye, develop nearsightedness, tiredness and pain in the neck and shoulders. It is suspected that heavy computer work can lead to glaucoma and other eye problems.

To avoid the above symptoms and risks, there are easy ways you can do to reduce computer visual stress and to avoid the pain and vision damage.

1. Adjust and use proper lighting.
Computer monitor eye strain is often caused by too much bright life. When you work on a computer, you should use lighting in the work place area only about half of the lights used in most offices.

2. Reduce the glare
Glare from walls and other gloss painted surfaces, as well as dazzling reflection from your computer screen can bring computer-related eye strain. To avoid these, you can put in an anti-glare screen on your monitor and you may want to repaint the walls with a darker color.

3. Change your monitor
If you can afford to buy a flat-screen computer monitor, your eyes will âappreciateâ it. The higher-imaging quality of these screens are much easier on the eyes, because the images have sharper edges, which contribute to the overall clarity of what youâre looking at onscreen, which in turn contributes to eye comfort.

4. Get frequent rests
To prevent computer monitor eye strain, you should take frequent breaks from your computer works. Most of eye experts suggests that eyes need to rest for 15 minutes during each two-hour period or for 10 minutes per hour of intensive work. A study found that computer workers who take short breaks are more productive than those who don't take breaks.

5. Exercise your eyes to reduce your risk of computer eye strain. Do some relaxing eye exercises like palming, thumb focusing and scanning. These eye exercises can help you to increase the flexibility of your eyeâs muscles and, lower computer eye strain effectively. Blink often if your eyes are dry. When staring at the monitor people would tend to blink less frequently, this will cause eye dry.

6. Adjust your computer properly. The ideal viewing distance is 20-24 inches. The correct viewing angle from the screen center is 10 to 20 degrees below eye level. However the ideal distance can vary with your size, height and posture.

7. Try to keep your wrists as straight as you can while typing. Use wrist support pads to keep your wrist comfortable and avoid any strain.

In fact, there is a number of eye-related problems that can contribute computer monitor eye strain. But don't rush out to buy glasses just in the hopes of relieving eye strain fast, because they may just worsen the eyeâs condition. Instead, choose to improve your vision naturally by following the right methods suggested by eye experts.

How can I have the power of a PC but the convenience of a laptop?

What would it take to have a tower PC tucked away somewhere and have a laptop-type keyboard/monitor running it, either via wire or wireless? Basically, it would be nice to have an out of sight box doing all the hard work, and whatever is on your lap is just the input (keyboard and mouse) and output (monitor). Tower PCs are so much more powerful than laptops, but I don't want to be forced to sit at a desk.

Screen sharing like VNC or Remote Desktop or LogMeIn are possible from one machine to another, but they are slow - too slow for gaming.

You can look for Keyboard Video and Mouse extenders that allow you to run your monitor and keyboard at a distance from the machine. - this one will let you be 300 feet away but it costs $300 http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=87618

Watch out for limited resolution on the monitor because of bandwidth limits.
