The 5ms Response rate is a must for an extreme gamer. (by the looks of your video card I would say you are). The lower response rate, the better. For a 24 inch monitor this is an amazing response rate. I use the 20 inch Samsung in this model and it has a 2ms response rate. It is awesome for gaming. The colors are flawless and the monitor looks sophisticated.

I talk about the response rate because of ghosting. If you are playing good quality games (like Oblivion, F.E.A.R, and such) you will have to have a low response rate, or else your images can have a bluring effect and make you lag for a brief second. That brief second can mean life or death in a FPS (first person shooter).

what makes a good gaming monitor?

i dont want to spend so much on the actual pc if the monitor isnt even going to display it so well what makes a good gaming monitor? i was thinking about a 27 inch dell ultrasharp its about 500 dollars. is that worth it or is there something cheaper that is the same or better? if there are can you name a few? they dont all have to be 27 inches. thanks.

Gaming monitors you generally want the fastest response time. Anything that is 2ms-5ms should generally be just fine.

Beyond that, the contrast ratio and pixel pitch will govern how nice it looks. Really the best thing you can do is go to a local store (Best Buy, Walmart, Costco, etc) and find some nice looking monitors that you can afford and look good to your eye (this is important! it has to look good to you). Afterward, you can go online and fine a nicer price! =) Newegg.com and Amazon.com have great deals in comprison to local stores.

You can also read reviews on the monitor to see what gamers think, but again as long as it is 2ms-5ms you shouldn't have any problems with "ghosting" or the like.

I just recently bought a Gateway Monitor for my xbox360. it has 2ms response time, 24" screen the contrast ratio is 12000000:1 and resolution is 1920x1080. My question is: is this suitable for a gaming monitor?

Yes it's very good. Gaming monitors only really suffer from ghosting due to slower response times. 2ms is very fast and would give a very clear detail when there is lots of action on screen. The Contrast ratio is also very good and the resolution is fine.

yeah, that's actually pretty damn good.

60 frames per second calculates down to just under 17 ms.
so with 2 ms response time it should be able to accurately display about 500 frames per second, if the video card / interface could even keep up.

From what I can tell when talking about response time (ping or also called latency) always lower is better, Response time simply mean is that how much time it takes for data to travel from one location to another. In aspect of monitor, from video adaptor to visual display, the time it takes to travel.

My computer is going to be running an ATI HD4870 X2 but I'm planning on adding another card in the near future what kind of a monitor do you recommend I add? What should I look for in a gaming monitor? aspect ratio, refresh rate, and response time?

1. basicly look for a low rs time. mines 2ms
2. contrast. anyting above 1:1000 is fine cuz humans can only see something like 1:700(mines 1:7000)
3. and then a high resolution

I want something somewhat big with high resolution and a 2ms response time... for under 230 dollars(that supports windows 7). The ones I've been looking at all have some kind of cheap problem, like a bad stand, dead pixels, or no windows 7 support. Any suggestions?

Windows 7 Support? All monitors support Windows 7.

Asus makes the best gaming monitors and followed by Samsung. They have low dead pixel counts (usually zero) and great pixel pitch with typically 1000:1 static Contrast. Buy a Zero Dead Pixel warranty - it is usually $10-15

The human eye can only see about 25 frames per second (in fact, a movie is just 25 still pictures showing every second). This means that anything less than 40ms is going to appear instantaneous to you. It's physically impossible for you to notice a 3ms delay.

How to stop screen tearing in games?

It seems like every game i play on my PC i get screen tearing and the only way to solve it is to turn on Vsync. The problem with Vsync is it destroys my FPS. Is there anything i can do to stop this from happening? Or is there not considering every game has this Vsync option so i can't be the only one?

I honestly cant see why Vsync would destroy your fps with those stats...
My computer isnt much better than yours and I have no issues with Vsync on any game
