What do I need to build my own gaming computer?

The Dude

Hi, I'm wanting to build my own gaming computer but I don't know where to start. I'm wanting something powerful enough to run modern games on high graphics (Skyrim, Arma2, Mass Effect3, etc). My price range is $500-$700. Anything higher than that I could just buy an Alienware. I have the tower shell and fan but need everything else.

Answer
the cheapest gaming computer I managed to build and being capable to play the mentioned games including BF3 on high cost around $540 including the operating system. as you don't need the computer case the total price without the peripherals monitor, speakers, keyboard & mouse will be close to $500.

this is the parts list (cpu & hdd upgraded vs. the $540 version)
mobo - AsRock B75M LGA 1155 ($65)
cpu - Intel Pentium G860 3.0Ghz LGA 1155 dual core ($73 Amazon.com)
ram - Corsair Vengeance LP 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600 ($39)
gpu - PowerColor Radeon HD 7770 1GB ($120)
hdd - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB ($85 Amazon.com)
opt. drive - LG DVD Burner Model GH24NS90 ($18)
psu - Antec VP-450 450W ($35)
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit (Full) System Builder ($91 Amazon.com)
total $526 all parts from newegg.com unless otherwise noted

monitor, keyboard & mouse cost around $130
