Hi, I am leaving to the military on Tuesday for basic training. when i get to my first duty base i would like to get a laptop. My options are a 15 inch or a 17 inch, both are equally powerful and quite pricey but i already have the money beforehand just wont need it until i settle in the base. only difference is size and weight. Now it is mostly going to stay indoors, occasional outdoors. and If it comes to that day deployment to wherever they send me overseas. I also cant decide whether to choose a glossy screen or a matte screen. Can anyone assist me? thank you

Answer
15 is perfect 17 is too big, but that is my opinion.

Glossy vs matte screen

Matte displays have a "rough" anti-glare surface which diffuses light, eliminating reflections. The downside is significantly reduced contrast and less vivid colors, as light from the backlight of the monitor also has to pass through the same light-scattering layer.

Glossy displays have vibrant colors as well as high contrast and brightness because they have a smooth surface which lets most of the light through. As a result, it is often the choice for movies or gaming. However, strong lighting sources in the environment cause glare on these screens which is not only annoying, but can also cause eye strain and pain. Depending on the lighting, you will also see distracting reflections on top of the image

Which gaming monitor to buy ?

Ive a 17 inch viewsonic monitor paired with a GTX 570.
Need some suggestions on which new monitor (gaming) to buy Asus/samsung/LG/Acer/Benq etc.
24inch or 27inch.
Card is no problem , ill get gtx 770 in a few months
Budget no problem too...

Answer
It depends on what you prefer (matte or glossy finish). I would definitely lean toward a 24" instead of a 27 since the bigger you get and stay at 1080p the less clear (more pixelated) your screen gets.

The most important thing for games is to make sure it has a refresh rate of at least 120hz, the improvement in motion fluidity is the single biggest upgrade you can get. I prefer Asus and Samsung models myself because they tend to have better picture quality than the BenQ models, but all three companies make solid offerings.

I'd look at:

Asus 248qe 24" 144hz (matte)
Samsung 23a750d 120hz (glossy)

They do make 27" versions in those if you do decide you want bigger. Both have decent color if you have someone professionally calibrate but won't be anything special out of the box. TN panels in general (all gaming monitors) are pretty meh as far as picture quality though, so you honestly won't notice since it will still be an upgrade from what you're using now.
