Designing a 3D computer game?

DoubleA

Hi!

Thanks a lot for viewing my question.

I was just wondering if anyone out there would know what it took to design a computer game, a 3D one if possible. I was wondering what programs you could use, what knowledge you would need, etc.

Hope someone can help! I need as detailed answers as possible!

Answer
well there's a huge difference between 3d and 2d games. There are several programs out there that help you make 2d games very easily and quickly (RPG Maker as an example, or Game Maker). Very easy programs to use and very flexible. However when it comes to 3d games that's a huge jump. You need a game engine. There are a couple free ones out there, google Ogre3d. You need a few programmers to get the junk moving around in the screen. You need a 3d modelor to make the models and export them in the format necessary for the game engine. You need Skeletons for the models so that they are able to move, in other words an animator. You also need another person to make textures. Also storyline is a necessary factor in any decent game. Those I believe are the bare necessities for starting to make a 3d video game. P.S. The programing can range in languages from C to C++ to Basic and blah blah blah. Hope I've helped =)

How do you make a 3D computer game?

I want to make a game. I know that it involves programming and design, but can anybody give me a short tutorial or a free software that help with this?

Answer
most programmers go and do a 3 year degree

for a crash course, I recommend doing some 3d designs and learn some c++. music tracks and sound effects depend on the programming and timing of certain movements.

As far as I know there is no certain way of getting a user friendly programme that allows you to design games.

designing games involves:
getting the right storyline
choreography in minute detail (animation in many seconds per fram)
sound effects
music
programmes
storyboards
working out the dimensions of the levels
designing your characters correctly
timing the programmes and clips
short animations
voice actors
designing the colour scheme
debugging the programmes

it takes 20-30 great specialists who have years of experience in their field and degrees in art and design (some may even have masters) 2 years to design a descent game. Take a guess how long a person with little experience, knows little about what to do, has no knowledge or experience in any of the functions of a game designing team to design a game.

I have tried getting a team of 5-6 people to design a small snippet of a game during my A Levels, and we failed to even get past the storyboard stage. It's not easy, it takes time, dedication, commitment and a lot of work to get things done. If you have never done any 3D animation or modelling, you're in for a treat.

If you are serious about this, I recommend learning the programme behind the more basic games like pong or the original donkey kong to get an idea of the work behind it before going after anything of a higher calibre.

I also recommend a software called Dark Magic for designing bits of game. The more complete package requires going to manufacturers and really good programmers for advice and sources. Most of the good stuff is in the US so they are hard to track down. Some of these packages, such as that for sound only, cost about £5000 each. I don't know what those of higher calibre would cost.

There are also a set of reviewed good game programming books available on Amazon, but I have never tried them so I can't vouch to how good they are. Some fo these might be old or out of print, so you may want to look around on ebay as well.

Hope this helps
