Computer game pathetic response to mouse and keyboard control?

gmcv

I just installed Brothers in Arms - Highway to Hell into my computer. All is ok until the game gets to the choice to play or do dome setup of options. The background images of a burning windmill wheel and people moving is like in staggered movements. This is at screen resolution of 1280x1024. The mouse cursor doesn't move fluently, its REAL sticky, and when I go tp play the game its completely useless trying to aim and fire a weapon fast enough to stay alive. Using the keyboard WASD keys to move my character is jerky and slow.
I tried changing the screen resolution to a lesser value. Getting the mouse and keyboard to move to the arrows was like hell. I noticed when I had changed the res that the timer that gives 15 seconds for you to accept the change on not was actually taking 10 seconds to countdown and change from 15 to 14, and 14 to 13 etc.
The only screen resolution that gets the timer right (mental counting time for me) is the ridiculous setting of 320x200. Unreadable onscreen writing (guides/tips/tutorial etc and almost useless image beyond my nose due to pixelation. Running at a screen res on 400x300 is pretty smoothe but also has pixelated writing and edges to my face and other objects.
I've tried lessening the Texture QualityShadow, the Texture Quality and the Shadow Detail from High to Medium and Low. That doesn't do anything to speed the gameplay.

Is this a problem with Frame Rate...my Graphics card?
I have a pretty good computer and its all up to date with drivers etc. My computers specs well exceed the minimum requirements to play this game.
Here are the details of my computer, the game min requirements and details about DX and more.

Any help and ideas on getting rid of this stroboscopic effect I'm bugged with will be well appreciated.
Gothic 3 Enhanced was a bit like this Hells Highway but nowhere near as severe. I kinda fixed that by lessening details in the scenery etc.

Anyway, this is a different ball game and its not a stroll in the park.
Cheers

Answer
you have good system specs to run this game other than your video card. I highly recommend a Nvidia 8800GT or a Radeon HD4890. Make sure you have a 400W or higher PSU to run the cards first. Also make sure that your Bridge type is a PCI-E. Other than that, you have everything required to play this game well.

The only other possible problem is to many background applications running at once, or registry needs to be cleaned up, or you have a virus or two. I also recommend you De-fragment your hard drive with your O/S on it. Things will run faster if you do this.

Get a virus scanner ( AVG will do well ) and let it scan your system and remove any crap it finds as well. This will also improve performance.

But even so, a 7300GS should be able to give you better performance than what you stated. I highly recommend that you do all the other things I've listed before upgrading to a better video card to help eliminate the possibility of it JUST being the video card.

Dont get suckered into buying a $5000.00 computer from DELL / Alienware (basically same company now) or Falcon NW.....that is outrageous for a computer considering it probably cost less for them then it does for me to build....but my price is half of theirs with same parts and quality.

Spending $5000.00 doesnt make you a hard core gamer....my $2200.00 system can keep up with theirs with no problems. So dont go for these way overpriced computers when you can spend half as much and walk with more.

Can some 1 tell me where i can find a great gaming computer and for how much?

Im looking to spend about $1100

Answer
At $1100 you will get much more bang for your buck by building your own computer.

What's a good gaming computer?

Dell xps or alienware? wich one is good, not expensive either and also good in doing school work? if you know another brand let me know

i have a dell, not sure what kind, i guess its those gay school kind, and its not good for gaming at all, i tried to play age of empires on it that i bought, and it slows down big time, so yea i need some help guys, dont know much about computers.

ok thx
Graphic card, thats what i basically need, geez thanks alot :)

might just stick with my dell now :)

Answer
The best gaming computer would be one you build yourself... if you are serious about gaming then you will learn how to build you own computer which is fairly simple... and much more cost effective. i build a full gaming rig for around 1000 bucks... you can build one for much less if you make an AMD based rig.. alien ware is owned by dell now i believe so pretty much your stuck with a very expensive xps system from dell. there are many gaming rigs you can get from mom and pop companies for much cheaper than dell... just look in pcgamer magazine. if you can... get their buyers guide special edition.... they show you how to build a very cost effective rig yourself. Furthermore, age of empires is a very weak game.. try maybe adding a graphics card to your current machine and that should boost performance 10 fold... if you are playing games a lot such as crysis and left 4 dead ( which are very graphic intensive) than build a true gaming rig... otherwise just get a new graphics card. youtube how to upgrade your graphics card and you should be set.. good luck!!

Is a 2ms response time for an lcd monitor ok for gaming?

Thedrip

Answer
yeah, that's actually pretty damn good.

60 frames per second calculates down to just under 17 ms.
so with 2 ms response time it should be able to accurately display about 500 frames per second, if the video card / interface could even keep up.

monitor response time?

Sam

When buying a monitor for gaming what is better, to have a higher response time 5ms or a lower one of 2ms?
Thanks

Answer
Hello

From what I can tell when talking about response time (ping or also called latency) always lower is better, Response time simply mean is that how much time it takes for data to travel from one location to another. In aspect of monitor, from video adaptor to visual display, the time it takes to travel.

Hope this helps!!!

To the PC gamers out there, is this a good gaming PC?

Ross

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/compaq-cq2930ea-desktop-pc-with-e2050s-20-led-backlit-monitor-17799677-pdt.html

Answer
No, not at all. You're going to need to spend at least £600 to get something that isn't going to be awful at games £1000 is very easily possible but not needed. That PC probably can't even be upgraded. Those cheap HP computers, don't usually even have a PCI Express slot, so you couldn't even put a graphics card in it.

Let me run you through the kind of things to look for, in a gaming PC

First of all The processor. While you don't need anything too powerul here, go for an Intel based system. While the AMD FX systems aren't bad, Intel i3, i5, and i7 simply give better gaming performance. Avoid Celeron, and Pentium dual core processors though, these are piss poor at best.

RAM. Atleast 6gb ddr 3 3 is a must these days, 4GB, isn't really enough anymore, and certainly won't be enough as the next generation of games start to come out. I would recommend 8gb though.

Here's the most imporant part now. The graphics card. Avoid anything that says its integrated, or onboard, etc. Such as Intel HD These are just not suitable for gaming at all, and offer very poor performance in games, infact most games won't work at all

You really have two brands to go for. Nvida Gefoce, and AMD Radeon. I'm not getting in to which is best, that's a can of worms and a debate for fanboys. Instead, I'm going to just explain what to look for.

First of all with the Nvidia Geforce. if you notice all of them have a model number. for example Geforce GTX650ti. How to work this out, is. "GT" is a prefix in front of all the newer ones, X is the higher end gaming cards. This is really what you want to be looking for. Then the number 650 the 6 is the generation. This goes 1 (which were all crap and you don't see them anymore) 2, 4, 5, and 6. This is the generation, they're usually updated yearly here. the higher this first number the newer it is, this doesn't always mean its better than those of a previous generation though, the second number is the most important. These usually go 20 30 40 50 60 70 and so on. You want one that's at least 50 or higher, (at a push you could get away with a 640, but it's not going to be THAT good. Finally "Ti" stands for titanium. These are the higher end models of that series, and better than for example the standard gtx650.
Ideally, I would recommend a geforce GTX650, but you may not get one on your budget

With Radeon cards. Example Radeon HD 7850. These again, the 7 is the generation, 8 is the series (with these this is the most important part) and 50 is a variation (usually 50 or 70, obviously the higher number is a little better). With these cards you want atleast a 7XX, but 8XX would be better.

So with all that said, at your price range, you're not going to get much. PC world is probably the worst place you could get one from. You would be better looking on http://www.meshcomputers.com/ Or finding a small computer shop that will custom build you something. You may have to compromise on certain parts, but even then, you're likely going to be paying around 600 for something that suits your needs.

If this is out of your budget, or more than you're willing to spend, I recommend just getting a Xbox 360, or PS3, it doesn't matter which, they're both good game consoles. Sure they're not as good as a proper gaming pc. But they're a far better gaming system than any PC under £500 or so.

Gaming Desktop for around £800?

vernon

I need a new desktop, and have around £800 in vouchers for curry's / PC world. I have been researching it for a while, and gradually getting more and confused! I know what specs i would like and wandered if these were ambitious or i could get better....

Quad core Intel processor, 4GB RAM, High-end graphics cards 1GB?

i already have a monitor and other bits and pieces, just the tower is needed..... some examples and links would be much appreciated thanks

Answer
For building a PC, especially one for gaming, you should shell out a few bucks for "PC Gamer" magazine. Each month in the hardware section in the back of the magazine thereâs a current recommendation for parts to build a system. They give a dream system for those with deep pockets, a medium system that should work for most games, and a budget system for those with limited resources. They also have reviews. The best thing would be to find it at the library where you can look over the back-issues to see the articles and reviews of hardware.

These will give you an idea of what to put in a balanced system.

Remember, too, that if you use a 32 bit operating system, it cannot use more than about 3GB, so no use purchasing 4GB. Get three 1GB sticks. However, if you use a 64 bit operating system, then you can use as much as the motherboard and your budget will allow.

Be sure and use DDR3 memory. It has come down in price and is faster than DDR2.

Consider waiting until Oct. 22nd and purchase a copy of Windows 7 for your operating system when it is released. It will blow away Vista and the outdated XP.

Stick with an i7 or i5 processor, or, at least one that uses the 45nm technology - not the dated 65nm technolgy. A 1GB graphics card may be overkill. It could blow most of your budget. Look for something in 256MB or maybe 512MB.

Multi-Monitor Gaming PC Build?

Jimbop

Ok so i'e recently come into some money and have decided to treat myself to a new super-duper computer. I'm planning on having it custom made with a view to upgrading parts at a later date (a year or so down the line at least) i'm quite ambitious with what i want from it and this being my first custom-made comp i feel i need some serious help.

Ideally i want to be able to run a minimum of 2 monitors, but possibly 4. I also want to be able to play games such as WoW and crysis on fairly high settings and watch films and TV on Media Center at the same time.

I was thinking of using either 2 NVIDIA GTX 280 or 2 ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 in SLI or Crossfire, although I've heard there are problems with multile monitors so my other option would be a single NVIDIA GTX 295 or a single ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2.

Processor-wise, i was thinking of either Intel Core i7 920 (2.66GHz) 8 MB or Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 (4 x 2.83 GHZ) with 6gb of DDR3 RAM.

And finally for the motherboard i was thinking of a Asus P6T WS Revolution (Intel X58)

So will these parts work to give me my dream machie or do i need to change anything drastically? Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Answer
Ive been running dual monitors for years both on single graphic card set up and on dual graphic card set up.

1 thing to note is when on single you split the processing power (gfx)between the two monitors. Also note some drivers don't properly accelerate the secondary monitor too well. This is mostly with ATI and older drivers not sure of the new range.

In my experience Id go for two NVIDIA cards with SLI as an option... IE make sure its all compatible but not install it. Then have two monitors for a gaming rig and four for entertainment rig set up. Use utilities like UltraMon to disable the monitors on the fly when you want ultimate gaming without loss of speed ;)

If thatâs not enough go SLI but not all software supports it and SLI / Crossfire doesnât give that much a boost for the bucks. So also if money is tight Id get a single better graphics card rather than 2 lesser ones.

Have fun with your new toy and dont forget fast ram and a fast hard drive too!

are these system specs good for gaming?

Robert

Laptop
-Amd A6-5200 quad core (2.4ghz)
-Amd Radeon HD 8400
-8gb ram
-resolution 1366 x 738
also mini question if i hook this laptop that i may get to an 1080p tv will it change the monitor and resolution ? ?
p.s atleast play most games on medium/high not ultra

Answer
It is an alright gaming pc. You would be able to play most games on medium settings.
If you connect the laptop to a tv it shouldn't change resolution, and if it does it will change back automatically when you disconnect the laptop from the tv.
Hope i helped

The few gaming computer that are out there for that price are pretty much the same. Costco has one that is 600 plus tax. That might be ok. At least it's got a lot of Ram. Also this one at Cyberpower is close to your price range.

Looking for gaming computer under $700?

Chandler

I am looking for a desktop or laptop under $700. I don't mind building it, but I think I might only do that if it's a kit that comes with all the parts. I plan on using it almost entirely for gaming, since I am upgrading form a HP Pavilion dv4t-1600. I only have minimum requirements of 4-6gb ram and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 250 or ATI Radeon 4890, and a cas similar to the NZXT Guardian Blue.
I have already looked and have found a few but I want to find one with high performance but low price. Thank you.

Answer
These days you can get good laptops for less than $700 at the N e w e g g website.

Just look for those with the AMD "A6" processors. Those are really cost-effective because they include a 4-core CPU and a great Radeon Graphics chip in one die, which makes them good for games.

And at that level of price you will find them with 6GB of RAM and 500+ GB hard drives.

27" vs 24" gaming/editing monitor?

freshpoo4u

so I'm getting a pc soon and it's going to be used for everything from heavy gaming to editing in photoshop and Sony Vegas. I have the necessary specs for what I want. Now all I need is the monitor and I have no idea what to do. The 1440p monitors are WAY too expensive. I have heard however about those Korean brands...but I'm scared to try those out. I really want a 27 inch monitor (preferably Ips) but I guess 24" is fine. I haven't really made up my mind. My budget is 350 and less. Any suggestion? Personal experiences? Anything helps.

Answer
For hybrid gaming/editing use, the best monitor you could get would be an IPS-panel with 1920x1200 (16:10) resolution at 24". Never buy a TN-panel.

A 27" IPS-monitor with 2560x1600 (or 2560x1440) will be a problem in heavy games due to the high resolution (requires more power, or a non-native resolution choice). It also costs more (but would be the best option for editing).

Two good (and cheap) 24" monitors that I can personally recommend (tried both):
* DELL U2412M ULTRASHARP (24").
* HP ZR2440W (24").
Find the best/cheapest online computer store you trust, list IPS-panels by price, and look at the cheapest ones that has 1920x1200 resolution. That is a good starting point.

dead pixel korean monitor?

Chase

I am interested in getting one of the 2560x1440 27 inch korean monitors. Basically, the non-pixel-perfect ones are $300 and the pixel-perect ones are about $370. I am trying to decide whether it matters to me or not. I'd like to hear from people that have had these monitors with dead pixels. How many do you have and does it bother you? Can you only see it sometimes or is it always visible? I am going to do a lot of gaming on it and I heard you can't really see it then (but I am also going to be browsing). Another thing; light bleeding. Is this common and what does it look like? Is it very annoying?

Answer
It is not bad at all, but it drives some people crazy... http://www.ehow.com/how_6899780_fix-dead-pixels-laptop.html yes some times you can fix them and they will go away for months and then come bad... Good luck...

I'm trying to see all the options for getting a new laptop, my main requirement is graphics everything else is variable. I need at least ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 or Nvidia 9800m GS. Any laptop with at least that graphics is almost certainly powerful enough in all other aspects.

Answer
A gaming computer is based off of building your own computer, or paying way too much for an in the box computer. Keyboards, mice, hard drive, and sometimes manufacturer is irrelevant.

Nvidia is the chip set maker, not the actual product maker, so that says very little, though Nvidia is very reliable in my experience And the Ion line seems to be good enough for decent WOW type games. A core2 might get you by on some older games, but it cant compete with some other newer processors that run at higher speeds. You've got enough ram, I've never needed more than 4 gigs. Its a good computer, but I'm not sure I'd call it a gaming computer.

aviatingamateur did ever come to your mind that if i had the money for an hdtv that i my question would be "whats the best and biggest HDTV on the market!" well that is not my question you completely avoided my question an therefore your answers is completely useless an worthless to me Somebody else please answer my question correctly!!

Answer
While aviatingamateur does usually give good answers, I have to disagree with him here. What a hell of an answer to give. Not everyone can afford an HDTV, and there is nothing wrong with CRT TVs, even if they are STANDARD-definition CRTs. They provide excellent contrast, color, and response time (lack of motion blur) as compared to LCD TVs and monitors.

Flat-screen CRTs don't give you the effect of looking into a fishbowl, but they are slightly more prone to geometrical distortion due to the appearance of concavity. They also tend to be heavier than their curved-screen counterparts because the glass needs to be thicker (the curved shape gives strength to the tube). Still, I say you're usually better off going for a flat-screen CRT if possible, as the picture looks more realistic and there is less glare from reflected light.

Resolution isn't the only factor when it comes to picture quality, nor is it the most important. What good is a high-resolution display if it is prone to dead pixels, blurriness during fast motion, and washed-out colors?

There's a reason why CRT monitors are preferred over LCD monitors by hardcore gamers, graphic design artists, professional video editors, videophiles, and photograph publishers alike.

Computer monitor for gaming?

Jared

Could someone list a good monitor(s) for gaming based on price.
I'm very interested in the new IPS panel type, however usually these give a 8ms response rate (Which isn't that poor for gaming?)

Would I be better off getting a tn monitor with a 2/1 ms response rate or a IPS monitor?

Give links to suggestions please
Will NOT be using 3d. Not at all interested especially if it makes monitor more costly
Screen size should be 20-24 inches. 24-27 inch monitors you can show too, but not as interested
All of the monitor top 10 generic lists I find rank the Viewsonic VX2453MH-LED 24-Inch Ultra-thin Widescreen LED Monitor great, however with this being a TN panel, i dislike the darkness you see when looking at it from a poor angle (I plan on laying on my bed sometimes to watch movies, bed is lower than level of monitor)

Answer
if you want a gaming monitor, you dont need a super ultra epic high end monitor. a game will look great on a standard monitor as long as it's 1080p

What are the real advantages of an IPS monitor? I will choose best answer.?

adam

I just built a computer that I will use for gaming and working (I'm an economics student), and I'm looking for a monitor. I will probably run two at some point. What are the advantages of an IPS monitor? Everyone says they are necessary for gaming nowadays, what tangible difference will I see? I am looking in the 22-23 inch range, sub-$200. Asus seems to have a lot on Newegg, but I notice that many non-IPS LED monitors sell for about the same price. Are they worth paying more for? Or would a similar LED with better contrast, lower ms, ect.... get the job done just as well? Recommendations are welcome!

Anyone who can explain this to me will get a quick 10.

Answer
In general, IPS is better for color accuracy and wider viewing angles. IPS are good all around monitors with little weakness. TN is better for gaming. Not that IPS is necessarily bad for gaming, they are just not quite as responsive as TN monitors. TN also has much worse viewing angles and limited color depth. If you will only be gaming, I would go TN. But if you need a monitor good for gaming as well as movies, photo editing, browsing, etc., IPS would be better.

Is this a nice gaming computer?

CPU-Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz

GPU-2x ATi Radeon HD 4870 CrossFire
Motherboard-Intel DX38BT

Case-Thermaltake Armor Series Full Tower
Power Supply-Antec 1000W TruePower
CPU Fan-Zalman CNPS9700
Monitor-28" ViewSonic Piano Black 1920x1200

My goal was too keep it under $3000, and I did. I think I made a pretty nice computer.
That dude said I could get these specs for under $2000? He doesn't know what he's talking about. And I don't need 500GB of storage space, people don't realize that that is absurd for the average person. And too the guy that said I should get at least a core 2 duo, I have a Core 2 Quad...
To the guy that said Core 2 Duo's are better, I have something too say. I know of two games, Crysis, and Unreal Tournament 3, that are encoded too use all 4 cores, and games that are coming out will also be encoded too use all 4 cores. And, why would gamers who want the best hardware buy core 2 extreme quad-cores, when they could buy E8500s? Because some of the newer games, and the new games coming out take advantage of all 4 cores.
LOL, one guy said that I need too upgrade my 2 4870s too one 8800GT. LOL.
NO, NO UPGRADES. I will have this computer for the next 25 years.

Answer
Oh yeah--you be rocking. Id trash the quad and go with an E8500 Core 2 Duo. Games aren't quad pumped so a quad is a waste of 2 cores. On Exotic Air I got the 8500 over 4 Ghz and run it at 3.8 24/7-(9.5X400 with 1600FSB) -try that with that quad. Quads don't overclock as well as duals. You want a giant dual for an extreme gamer. I just built a rig with an Asus X48 board 4GBs of dominator and 2 4870s in CF--Runs Crysis at very high so make sure you have your seatbelt handy. I'd consider an Asus board thou. Thats all I use. I assume that Intel board is one of the few Intel boards you can overclock. It would be a pity to built a rig like that and not be able to clock.
Oh if you already have the quad then clock the heck out of it--got the cooler for it.
Youre right about the dude saying you can build it for 2 grand. How does getting a friend to build it for you make the parts $1000 less?LOL
The people ragging on the cost need to get a clue. TRUE high-end gaming rigs cost a LOT of money to build. Youre not going to own Crysis or get 18,711 on 3Dmark2006 with a $500 Dell.
I have an Extreme in my XP gaming rig. If I thought a QX9770 would be the way to go that is what I would have put in this rig, I read a comparision of 2 gaming towers doing gaming benchmarks one with the 9770 and one with the 8500 and clocked at the same speed the 9770 had nothing on the 8500 so why spend 1200 more for nothing? So you can encode Crysis to run on all 4 cores? I max it out and I don't have to do any silly encoding. When the new Intels come out is when I'll add cores. I wanna run fast now not 6 months from now.
LOL--here's some benchmarks for the guy who suggests "upgrading" to a single 8800GT:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341&p=20
Nice thing about the X38 board is it runs both slots at X16. I contacted ATI anf asked them if the P45 board with X8 per slot could handle the massive bandwidth of the 4870s DDR5 and they confirmed that it wouldn't and 2 in CF on a P45 board would be a total waste of money. Thats why i went with the X48 board. Nice build. Good luck with it.

Good Gaming Computers?

Evan

I just want some suggestions for what type of gaming computer I should get. I am looking for desktops, so not any laptops please. I want actual computer names, not sites where to look. I want computer names and where to get them and why they would be considered good because I don't know much about computers. I would like to know what brand of computer to get like Alienware, Cyberpower PC, iBuyPower, Asus, HP. I want to know the best out there for maybe under $3000. Thanks in advance.

Answer
You wont like this advice i am about to give for that Budget the only computer you should be getting is one you build your self .
You can get a decent computer that will play all games on Maximum settings for $1500 easily and i cant recommend Brand names as i build Gaming Rigs .

BUYING GAMING COMPUTER!?

Thomas

Hey guys i want to buy a gaming laptop but im not sure what to buy. What is the best laptop that can play WoW and Elder Scrolls nothing heavy but just a decent gameing laptop for as cheap as possible? Hopefully 1500 or less (the less the better)
I need a mid lvl gaming laptop that will be pluged in about 70% of the time for 1000 or less hopefully want to run wow n oblivion

Answer
For only games like World of Warcraft and Elder Scrolls, I would not buy Alienware. Well, I would never buy Alienware, but I think they're just overprices (they are).

For the games you listed, almost every 'mid' laptop from Dell or any other major manufacturer will do, but..

Is this going to be plugged into the wall 90% of the time, or on-the-go most of the time?
Do you have a $$ preference?
Do you record videoes in WoW?

Really, 2gigs of ram, and an ATI or Nvidia mobile card in any newer laptop (not netbook) will run both games fine, its just a matter of preference for screen size, battery life, etc.

Is this a good gaming computer?

I need a link to a high-end gaming PC company.?

icefox

I'm trying to prove a point about mac computers, if you can call them that. I need the name of a company that makes high end gaming PCs. like voodoo or falcon NW. Are there any others, I'm trying to demonstrate that taking up as little space as possible doesn't make it a good system. I often refer to Macs as big calculators.

Normally I should know, but I built my own comp, and I think I need a brand name to fight mac.

Please, if you have mac, and support mac computers, don't respond, you wont convince me or anybody else.

Answer
IceFox-

I build gaming machines, mainly as a hobby but I also build them for friends and family.

You don't need a brand name to fight Mac-N-Trash, you just have to understand that those crappy machines are like Dell, Gateway, HP, and all Laptops.

Here is the scoop. My uncle, (now retired), used to work for Dell Computers.

Mac's like the others are what we call Turn Key Systems. Basically they are for novice users that do not know how to build solid systems. So they have a company built machine that has a life of about 2.5 years before upgrades become necessary.

Since you build computers too, you already know what i am about to say is true. These companies, like Mac-N-Trash rope people into a system that is just enough to get them over the hump. Then as it always happens, the best friend comes over with the "Game" and the system will barely run it, or Windows will throw up a message stating there are not enough resources available to operate this program.

I used to build machines to what people would claim they were going to use the system for. "Oh mainly just the internet and some word processing, simple record keeping, you know."

Yep so you build this machine:

Intel Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz Processor w/ 533 Fsb.
Asus 848P Chipset Mobo
40 Gb Hdd
512 Mb PC-2700 Memory
ATI Radeon 2600 PRO Vid-Card
Sound-Blaster 2.1 Live Sound Card.

Just enough to give them a little overhead for say HALO, and that is about it, right?

Yeah, buddy brings over Doom 3 does the install, and bingo, Computer is Bogus.

So now you get then phone call, "Hey my machine won't play this game. What will it take to make it play this game?"

"Well sir, this is what you are going to need, but here is what I would recommend, its going to be a $1100.00 upgrade for your system."

"WHAT!!!!!!!!???????? I'm Calling DELL!"

Then he calls the computer manufacturer and find that they no longer support his old system, and they recommend this other newer system, (that still won't play Doom 3), but is about the same price I quoted him to "upgrade".

Ok now that is with the PC owners.

Mac-N-Trash is a whole different ball game. To upgrade a Mac, you deposit it in the trash, (the whole computer), including keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer and CPU then buy a whole new system that costs twice what the old one did. Then you rinse and repeat as the newer models come out.

The difference with PC's vs. Mac's is the fact you can build the base part of your computer ahead of the curve, use some of your older hardware, and upgrade it as necessary, until your base parts cannot be upgraded.

For example. Here is my current machine.

AMD Athlon X64 4400+ Toledo Processor, (Socket 939)
Asus A8V-E SE Motherboard
4Gb A-Data PC-3200 LL RAM
MaxCool 700 Watt PSU
250 Gb Hitachi Deskstar HDD, (U-ATA 133)
160 Gb Hitachi Deskstar HDD, (U-ATA133)
Creative Sound-Blaster XF-I Gamer Series Sound Card
PNY Technologies nVidia 8800GTS PCI Express 16 Vid Card
BFG Technologies Ageia Phis-x Card
Lite-On DVD/CD RW RAM Drive
Sun Microsystems 19 Inch Graphics Rendering Monitor, (CRT).
XClio Turbine 230 Case
Microsoft Sidewinder Gaming Laser 1800Dpi Mouse
Saitek Eclipse Keyboard
Saitek Cyborg EVO Joystick
Creative 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers.

Yes some of the things I have in this system are cutting edge, but many of the hardware items are behind the curve. However, my system is 64 bit ready, and I am only running a 32 bit Operating System with Windows XP Professional.

The Motherboard and Processor are still going to operate Windows Vista just fine, same with the Memory, the system is SATA Drive Ready, so any time I need to upgrade, I can do that with out an issue. Its just a matter of purchasing parts.

You cannot do that with a premanufactured computer. Even a Mac. So much of the system is proprietary you are litterally forced into purchasing their parts, or upgrading your system completely.

Now do I have customized parts on this machine? You bet!

But if you take that same parts list and give it to Dell, Gateway or any of the others, you are going to be looking at a system that will cost you nearly $4000.00 to purchase.

I built this entire system for about $1500.00.

It will do anything I throw at it. Play games, movies, burn DVD's, burn CD's, surf the net, whatever I want.

My point?

Build the gaming machine and you will never get a call back asking to have an upgrade later.

My secret?

www.newegg.com

If you haven't shopped there, you haven't shopped for electronics!

Fried Electronics cannot even beat them!

As for the Mac Users, out there reading this, don't bother to send me any of your opinions. Been there, seen it, got the T-Shirt. There is a reason Mac's have a bite out of the Apple. That is the chunk they took out of your booty when you bought it!

Oh, yeah just for the record, the PSU is on its 2nd System, the HDD's are on their 6th system, the Memory is on its 2nd System, the Optical drive, 7th system, the HDD cables, 15th system, Monitor 4th System, Keyboard, 3rd System, Case, 2nd System, Mouse, 2nd System, Joystick, 6th System, Motherboard, Processor, Vid Card, 1st System, sound card 2nd System.

The other system that the majority of this Hardware came from was upgraded from a P-4 2.4 Ghz then to a P-4 3.0E Ghz System. Everything else has seen AMD 80486 DX-66-2 systems, Pentium 1, 2, 3, 1st Gen P-4. Try doing that with old Mac Parts!

Personally, if they just stick to their I-POOD they will have a good thing. But I would say that Creative is going to give them a run for their money in short order in that department too.

I hope that helps!

What happened to the Huge Alien Monitor?

Rami

Hey guys, you know the 2880*900 display alienware monitor which was supposed to be released in late 2008. what happened to that? I can't seem to find any answers online.

Answer
I haven't seen any news about that monitor after May 2008. Looks like the higher-ups at Dell decided to quietly kill the project.

Most likely they decided that it will have a very limited sales so they canned it-- You can't really use a curved wraparound monitor like that for anything but PC games that would specifically support that resolution. Most people would probably opt for a flat-panel WQXGA 2560x1600 monitor instead because they can also use that for normal applications.

I have a Windows Vista Ultimate w/ Intel core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 @2.5 ghz 2.5ghz.
memory/ram 6gb, &
System type 32 bit Operating. System.
ATI Radeon HD 3450
Sound Card just says HD Audio Device.

While this game i want to buy has these minimum requirements.

Operating system: Windows 7 SP1, Windows Vista with SP2, Windows XP with SP3
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2 running at 1.60GHz or greater
Memory: 2048MB or greater
Hard Disk Space: 8.5 GB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 256MB or greater
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible

I was wondering if my pc system would play it?
Thank you for the all the help.

Also game is Alice Madness Returns.

Answer
DirectX 9.0 is a software component required by the game to operate. So long as your computer can support it (Which it can) you'll be ok there. The only component that is of any concern would by your graphics card. Compare the two side by side online to determine that. The rest will work. If it supports XP, you'll be fine. I would recommend upgrading to a 64-bit Windows 7 OS though. You'll experience much more fluid use from your computer.

I have windows 7 and my gaming score on the systems properties say 3.2, can my computer handle it?
Thank you!

Answer
right click computer, click properties and it will say your CPU, if it is more than 2.0Ghz then you are OK.

The graphics card requirement should be OK, it is quite low.

You are on windows 7 so you have much more than 512MB of ram.

All in all I would say you can easily run that game on almost any computer, so you should be fine!

A good Yu-gi-oh! game?

L

I start playing it again with a friend for old times, we play on kaiba corp but I need a offline game for any console..

Only a game with no story tho just to be able to duel the computer like the game Yu-Gi-Oh! Ultimate Masters: World Championship Tournament 2006. That was perfect but it's to old now, my friend uses the new cards so I need something more up to date, cheers!
If you get the latest one without a story then that would be great, doesn't matter if it's old.. once it is newer than 06

Answer
You can duel on free mode in most of the newer games, but you must unlock cards by playing the story mode. The World Championship games 2010 and 2011 take most of the fun from playing because they have weaker stories and some cards are unlocked through excessive free duels including the asinine Turbo Duels. 2010 is not as bad as 2011, but if you want an easier game, try the Tag Force games on the PSP.

So on craigslist I called a guy who was selling a premade gaming computer for 300 dollars but just the tower. He said it runs Aion/WoW to Mid-High settings, would you think that its a real deal or scam? I don't have the info about what parts are being used other than it being an AMD Dual Processor. (Once I find the post again I'll list the other parts that are being used)

Answer
It's probably an old gaming computer. I'm guessing it's an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor, and that's quite of an old CPU.

After downloading a free online game from a safe site, everything on my computer screen is super-sized. ?

Nizzle23

After the free trial was over, everything on my computer screen is HUGE! I've tried to zoom out and to change the size of the text, but it is not working. Zooming out just makes the huge text appear to be further away.

Answer
Its pretty easy to change the size of the screen.

This depends on the the monitor u have, and if u have the possible driver for the monitor, which i think u do, since u can play game.

Go on the dekstop, make sure nothing is on, no game nothing.

-right click on the mouse
-go on PROPERTIES
-then click the tab, APPEARANCE
-there u will see tab written FONT SIZE
-change it into normal
-Then on the top again click the tab settings
-U will see 'screen resoulution'
-there should be a pointor under the heading,
-slide the pointer completely to the right side, where there is written MORE
-click apply and ok

if that doesnt work, then that mean u need to download and upgrade ur visual (graphiccs) driver, or buy a new one, other wise it should work
:)

Computer game help blank screen.?

Richard R

Ok so I downloaded the computer game EA UEFA Euro 2008 from the EA site. Ive managed to install it all ok however when I load the game up it starts to load then a blank screen just appears. The only way to get rid of it is by pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Del which shows it is not responding, then you just have to end the task.
I was wondering if anyone else has been having the same proplem and if anyone has a solution to make the game load properly.
Thank you in advance for any answers given to this question.

Answer
check out their support forums but for now

update your video card drivers

update direct x ( if you have XP get the newest direct X 9 || vista get Direct X 10)

go into your video card settings ( not display properties ) and set the settings to either low or application preference.

check if your computer meets the game's requirements

LCD or LED pc monitor for gaming?

esco

I plan on getting a 30' monitor which one LCD or LED for gaming?

Answer
They will both be LCD - that's the display technology that all flatscreen monitors use.
LED or not is to do with the backlighting.

The LED one uses LED lights as the backlight
The non-LED one used a fluorescent light as the backlight.

It is more important to choose one with a good contrast ratio and fast reponse time.
Monitors with slow response times will show a ghosted blurry image in fast moving screen action. Monitors with low contrast ratio will have blacks that are dark grey and colours that look washed out.

Ideally you want a high contrast ratio, a fast response time and LED backlight.

Is this a 120hz monitor?

Justin

http://www.amazon.com/VE248H-24-Inch-Full-HD-Integrated-Speakers/dp/B0043T7FHK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1360119967&sr=1-1&keywords=asusVE248H
If not what is the best for $240 or less...

Analog Signal Frequency: 30 ~ 83kHz(H)/ 55 ~ 76 Hz(V)
Digital Signal Frequency: 30 ~ 83kHz(H)/ 55 ~ 76 Hz(V)
This is said on the amazon link, I think it has something to do with it
Also please give me proof or explanation because i don't want to mess up. I am buying a very expensive gaming pc with a gtx 680

Answer
The importance of 120Hz comes into play when we are dealing with film-shot material rather than video-shot material, keeping in mind that film is 24fps and video is 30fps or sometimes 60fps. A 60Hz display refreshes it's image 60 times per second and 120Hz doubles that. For video, there is no problem displaying a smooth image on a 60Hz display because the number of video frames will divide evenly into the display rate. But when using film material that is 24fps, the frame rate will not divide evenly into the 60 frame display rate, so the 3:2 pulldown technique is put into play. This means that for every 3 video frames that display once, there is a single video frame that is displayed twice. This allows an even frame rate to be divided into an odd-numbered display rate. This 3:2 causes artifacts, such as blurriness or choppy frames during fast motion.

Now, the 120Hz display rate can be divided evenly by both film's 24fps as well as video's 30fps or 60fps, thus eliminating the need for the 3:2 pulldown math. But keep in mind that video-shot material will look good on both a 60Hz and a 120Hz display, especially HD video. Film-based material won't look as good on a 60Hz display as a 120Hz display because of the need for the 3:2 pulldown. As far as standard-def material, this will look crummy regardless of the display rate.

Basically what I'm saying is, you probably do not need to get a 120hz monitor specifically for your gaming PC, just because it's a gaming PC. I'm personally using a $4000 PC with a 30" monitor and that monitor is 60HZ, and it runs significantly better than a 120HZ monitor I had earlier. If you are set on getting a 120HZ monitor because you are a gamer and want the best monitor for fast action gaming (ie. FPS games), then aim for <5ms input lag and <2ms response rate.

That screen you linked is 120HZ with the recommended input lag and response rate above, so if you're set on that, go ahead and buy it by all means.

Are 120hz computer monitors good for gaming?

undefined

I'm considering purchasing a second monitor for general usage as well as for having a second monitor while running fullscreen games, and I'm considering getting a nice 120hz monitor.

I am interested in Nvidia 3D Vision glasses, but that's a different story. A 120hz monitor is required for that so I'll need the monitor is I'm going to go for the 3D business.

Anyway - what are the advantages of 120hz in PC gaming?
I have a 120hz TV and it's pretty nice for movies and just regular television, but how is it for PC games?

And what about frames per second? With a 60hz monitor, vsync clamps framerate to 60fps to prevent tearing, if I have a 120hz monitor do I need to maintain a framerate of 120fps? Because I have a fine card, but I can't say it holds 120fps all the time. Is this a problem?

Basically, what should I know about 120hz computer monitors and dual-monitor setups?

Answer
Yes they are.

First thing, you'll be able to disable vsync altogether. Vertical tearing only occurs when your frame rate exceeds the refresh rate of your LCD monitor. Its unlikely that you will ever go over 120 fps in any modern games, so its unlikely that you will ever see vertical tearing again.

And for gaming, a 120hz screen is amazing. Very smooth, makes gaming easier, and frankly, it will just look better. Its tough to describe until you try one, but what I can say is that it did give me a noticeable edge in multiplayer games.

DIY Gaming computer running 64-bit Vista?

visualmaxi

Please recommend a motherboard, quad-core chip (intel or AMD), and graphics card (1gb). Bargain items if possible.

Answer
Go for an 8800gt (do not need 1GB).
Awesome performance at around $150 (due to GeForce 9 series replacing it).
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/search.asp?keywords=geforce+8800+gt&srkey=8800gt

Quad core will have no improved effect on games.

As for motherboard an SLI board will allow you to install 2 identical video cards for super performance:

No idea why you want 64-bit Vista for gaming.

Which is better for gaming ? TV or PC monitor?

Dren

Hi , I need to buy a display for my PC and I was wondering is there a difference in performance beetwen a LCD or LED TV and a PC monitor. Which is beter for gaming ?

Answer
TV's and Monitors are all LCD. The backlighting is different, either CFL or LED. Many people are confused about this. LED backlighting lasts longer and uses less power. As to using TV, the resolution may not be good enough for reading text. A friend of mine used TV's for monitor and it seems to look okay. As for gaming TV is fine because Xbox and PS3 use TV graphics and pretty darn good.
