My native resolution is 1600x900, on most games it'll be fine with displaying this. However recently I installed a new video card and on some games (not all) It seems that trying to set it higher than 1280x720 causes it to show that size, BUT only show a maximum of 1280x720 at any one moment giving it a "zoomed in" effect. I can't figure out what to do.

If your video card is a Nvidia you may want to check out the nvidia control panel. You may need to set it so that it expands the full size of your monitor resolution. I have to do this occasionally when I mess with my own resolution out of games, but I never play in full screen, so it may not apply to you.
Here are some instructions just to -check- the settings. Right-click your desktop and choose Nvidia Control Panel. From there you should see an option called "Adjust Desktop Size & Position" click this and you have 3 choices. "Aspect Ratio", "Fullscreen" and "No Scaling" Try setting it to "Fullscreen" this -should- force the games and desktop to take up your entire monitor area, regardless of the ingame resolution you select.

This should also allow you to pick your native resolution. However, if it doesn't, there is a chance your card doesn't support beyond the 1280x720 ingame. May want to check your card's packaging or developer website for more information.

beyond 1080 hmmm it really depends on the game for ex. some games needs res. of 1900x1200 to look good while other games look fine at 1440x900, another big influence is how big your tv/monitor is for ex. a small tv/monitor has less space but same amount of pixels as a bigger tv so it looks better. For most 15-40" tvs 1080p is fine beyond that there is 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 and even a higher res. tv showcased in ces 2010.
