Some Guy

My OS is Windows XP Professional.

I like PC gaming. I would like to install a new video card, as my current integrated Intel Pentium isn't doing too well. How do I install a new video card in my desktop?

And if you know of any guides, tutorials, or advice, please share.

Thanks

Answer
first figure out if your machine has onboard video, or a separate card...

If it is onboard, then the video is part of the main board... Not a biggie, it just requires you to look inside the machine for an open PCI slot...

PCI slots are normally beige or white in color, and will be on the lower left corner of the mainboard near the rear panel...

Now anytime you are inside the case of a computer a couple things to keep in mind... you wanna make sure the machine is powered down, but still plugged in to a properly grounded outlet,,,

Make a point to touch the metal frame of the inner case, before you handel anything else. This way, any static buildup you may have on your skin or clothes will be shunted to ground, and you'll minimize the risk of damaging something... I also use a static wrist strap anytime I am under the hood of a machine, but, a regular person, might not ever have another need for the strap...

anyhow,

If the machine has onboard video, and an open PCI slot, then it is a simple matter to take the new PCI video card, and plug it into an open slot. Just make sure to remove the knockout in the rear panel for that slot first. The card will only fit in a socket it was meant for, and it only goes one way... check your directions for any other connections like to audio.

once the card is seated in the slot, then close up the case, and remember to make your rear panel connections per the directions that came with your card...

If you had a separate card for video ad not onboard as part of the main board, then it is even more simple still... just open the case, and remove the card your monitor was plugged into, and replace it with your new card. then make your connections on the rear panel.

close up the machine and reboot the machine... If you replaced an onboard video with an add on card, you may have to disable the onboard video in the system setup aand you can get to that by pressing F2 durring system start up, before the windows wash screen... once the machine boots, then just follow the setup instructions that came with the card to install the drivers and reset your monitor settings...

good luck...

How much would a computer that can run Starcraft 2 cost?

Daray

I am thinking of getting a new computer but i know virtually nothing about computers. I was wondering how much would a computer that will be able to run new games like Starcraft 2 cost? Thanks.

Answer
Building yourself you could get away with 500 CDN.

Pre built... like over 1000 CDN.

By the way, building it yourself is like building lego. Go to PC Hardware Discussion on Gamespot and tell them your budget, and they will tell you what to order. Then just look up a video or picture guide on how to do it. Always order from Newegg. It's real cheap with excellent customer service.

P.S: If you have no mouse, keyboard and monitor add like 170.

Good luck.
