Answer
Build the computer yourself. It's much, much cheaper, and it's not exactly difficult. This guide tells you basically everything you need to know as well as lists tons of components to give you a rough idea of how much it'd cost. Read it well.

What do I need for a good gaming computer?

John Diaz

I want to know what I should look for for a good gaming computer. I'm not going to build my own computer. I also want to keep it under $1000. I just want to know what I should look for for a good gaming computer. PLS answer ASAP

Answer
Ok, as a person that recently got a gaming computer for only 600, I think I can help you.

You will need...

4 GB of ram.
a quad-core CPU.
a very good CPU Cooling system.
a gtx 450 graphics card or higher.
a gaming case labled 'Mid Tower'
a PSU with over 700 W (preferably around 850 W)
A motherboard that supports the graphics card that you want to buy and also supports 8 GB's of Ram.

Getting a good CPU Cooling system is very good if you want to save money on buying a good CPU. For instance, you can get a expensive 2.93 Gz CPU, or you could get a much cheaper, 2.66 Gz CPU and overclock it to 3.20 Gz. The best cooling systems you should look into are the refrigerated cooling system. It'll keep the cpu very cool even when its overclocked.

Ram is a essential if you want to play big games. Bigger games, most of the time open world games (skyrim, sleeping dogs, GTA), require more memory to run. If you try to run -lets say sleeping dogs-
with only 2 GB's of ram, you might get an error at the startup saying something related to memory.
Also, Ram will also help to support multiple programs running at the same time. So you could have itunes or the internet open while playing a game or something. You never really need more than 4 GB's of RAM imo.

Graphics card are the most important thing. I'm currently playing on a SLI graphics card. What that is is two graphic cards running together. It's cheaper than getting the higher-up graphics card and more effective. Though some old games don't support SLI, all the new games support it and the older games you won't even need to use the SLI system to play. Even so, their always updating the number of games that can play SLI. I would recommend SLI to you.

There's not much to say about the PSU. You just need that much wattage for a regular Gaming Computer. Less than 700 W will give your system blackouts randomly or the system won't even run.

The reason I say a Mid Tower Case is because of two reasons. PSU's over 700 W have thicker cables and need more room to operate. And also because refrigerated cooling systems for CPU's are very big and require a bigger case.

Some motherboard won't operate with some Graphics cards, so always think about the motherboard when choosing which graphics card to get, and vise versa.

You can get most of the things cheap at NCIX.com Only look at the ones on sale on NCIX, the real price is expensive but they have some damn fine sales. I got my 1000 W PSU from NCIX for only $120.
But when you go to that site, don't look at the 'After Rebate' price, Rebates are very annoying to do, I could have saved a extra $20 on my PSU but the Rebate was too complicated to do.

I wouldn't recommend getting used parts other than a case. A case won't matter if its slightly damaged whereas a motherboard thats slightly damaged might only last a few months after you purchase it.

I hope that helps :)
